They’re called cow killers as they have one of the most painful stings in the animal kingdom, so painful in fact that it was believed it could kill a cow, but that’s just an old wise tale. They’re also called Velvet ants but they aren’t ants at all, they’re actually wingless wasps, well the females are at least. Males have wings, but also lack a stinger. However most predators leave them alone regardless, thanks to the reputation of their female counterparts. They’re also solitary which is unusual for wasps.

That's a ground wasp, not an ant.
They are called velvet ants cause they look like fluffy ants but they are actually wasps without wings. (Only males have wings)
