Rolled edges and finish free necks isn’t really the right argument for relic guitars. You can achieve these mods on most guitars without the relic look.

I don’t hate relics nor would I judge those who buy them. Personally, I’m a proponent of “buy new and beat it up yourself”…. That’s just me.

Wish that everyone cared so much about my relic'd 86 Toyota Corolla

It does not look like a vintage Tele. At all. It looks like a high school shop class went bananas with the belt sander.

The wear looks fake af, that’s the problem

I don't finish the necks on my builds. The relic guitar look is a body finish style. It doesn't have anything to do with the neck that you couldn't do with five minutes and some sandpaper.

I'm not buying this argument. The only actual argument you need is, "I like them." That's good enough.

So, how does the stupid damage to the body finish make it feel better? One could smooth out the neck and fingerboard without faking abuse.

I don't buy ripped jeans.
I buy things that work.
If you want the neck to "feel better, " then you can change the finish. Sanding the neck is a change of finish, not a relic job.
I'd rather have a good guitar at a reasonable price, than something that cost extra for a "pre beaten" job.

This IS the same channel that had a chat with a luthier about sanding the neck for comfort, right?

The thing that irks me is that if I sold any of my "preloved" guitars, I'd get less for them, but if you trash it in the factory, then it costs MORE???
Nah.

Some road rash is fine; it's when it looks like it was used to shovel gravel that's a bit much.

Tbh, the only real benefit is any bumps and dings won't matter when it comes to selling it.

So if the neck and fingerboard edges provide the only advantage, why make the entire body look like there was an equipment failure in the factory? Personally I think relic guitars as a concept are dumb since youre paying the manufacturer to damage the body's finish, but it's an opinion just like anyone else's.

I like my guitars like I like old musclecars, to look like new! If a worn guitar is legit from time that's cool, a factory relic will always be lame in my book, but different strokes

Well, if that’s the case, i would not destroy the painting, i would only make the fretboard “used”

A vintage guitar naturally broken in over 20+ years is WAY DIFFERENT than a new guitar artificially broken in, in 5 days

It's WAY overdone. I've seen very few blackguards with that much wear on the body.

You can do the same for a new guitar without making it look like an old damaged POS and charging ridiculous $$$ for destroying it.

Ask Walter Trout about relics. He says it best. It's supposed to be earned through years of playing. It isn't supposed to be bought.

Wanting to own relic'd guitars is like wanting to smoke Marlboro because of the Marlboro man. Watching those ads as a kid of the 70's and 80's he was the coolest cat. Gritty as hell, not a problem in the world. Traveling where he wants in his beat up (relic'd) pickup, dog by his side and of course his pack of Marlboros. Relic'd guitars play on the same old emotions that the Marlboro man did: Nostalgia, rock steady dependability, longevity, durability, quality, rugged handsome less, facing the unknown with the confidence of having your well known sidekick(s) right by your side. And just like smoking Marlboro doesn't make you the Marlboro man, owning a relic doesn't give you a time tested instrument.

That was the worst argument for, I've ever heard.
