If you have an old guitar that's dinged up it means you're a badass player. If you have an old car that's all dinged up it means you're a bad driver.

I speced out and bought a heavy relic Fender Custom Shop Strat this past year. It looks beat up, feels worn in and plays great. The best thing about it is I have absolutely no fear about playing it or putting a new dent or scratch in it (not like I would know). I have owned high end core PRS models, custom shop Gibsons, and other nice brands and they just became case queens. I wound up playing my Mexican Fender more than anything as I did not mind whatever happened to it.

I like buying b stocks with minor cosmetic flaws for the discount. I’m not so concerned about accidentally damaging or wearing it in too much because it is already imperfect. I got $650 off an American pro II tele because it was dropped and has an indented strap button with a small gouge next to it. It still sounds and plays totally fine so it feels like a win. Plus I could tell my wife it was on sale.

In the classic car world, they don’t call it “relic” they call it “patina” and it’s definitely a thing. It’s far less common in cars than in guitars, but I have definitely seen people make intentionally worn-in paint jobs on old cars. Especially in the Rat-Rod scene.

This was a very valuable video on blue guitars

Almost everything I own was bought as "scratch and dent" deals because they were heavily discounted. Everyone plays a used guitar!

That ending was funny but it hurt my soul! Haha

a lightly reliced neck and body can be real comfortable and broken in, nice to play

I was at one of the last Van Halen concerts in Bangor Maine and Eddie was playing this really beat up white Wolfgang guitar and I thought it was so cool how he must have played it so much that it was like an old worn pair of jeans. Well, a few weeks later, that same guitar was in a guitar magazine and Eddie explained that it was reliced by someone who had a hand in building the guitar. I was a little disappointed but it did look cool.

Personally If I go to a store and they have an item I don’t want. i just don’t buy it. Thousands of things I don’t buy. Never have a problem that other people do. Why would relic guitars be any different than a couch at costco?

Relics are awesome if done tastefully. And no, nobody is trying to make it look like they’ve been playing for 30 years.

I like the looks of a road worn, relic guitar. Being a 71-year-old intermediate beginner (AKA old, fat, couch sittin', cowboy chord strummer), I wont live long enough to naturally age a guitar. So buying a pre-worn out guitar is what I'll do. Don't hate.

I think people mix up thinking a relic finish is for people too lazy to wait the decades to do it naturally when it’s purely an aesthetic vibe. I have both relic and non and I love both. I just love guitar. I want to play and be around them. I think that gets lost these days

I have a couple relics, I'm not snobbish about it, I kinda like it personally. It doesn't affect the playing ability at all, but does sort of look cool to me.

I'd never buy a relic guitar but, to each his own. Doesn't matter to me what others like 😮

I'm a 68 yr old learner with 4 new guitars Les Paul, SG, American Strat and American Tele guitars - I look after them and play them (badly) - I'm sure they will wear a little naturally - I have no desire to pay a lot of money for a pre-worn or relic - they are for dilettantes :)

I wouldn’t pay more for a relic but what I like about relics is that I don’t freak out about a nick or a ding. They just add to the character.

I personally don't understand folks who buy an extremely expensive guitar with a fake relic. That being said, when I see an old beat up guitar, I love that look. In the end, it's all personal preference and I don't begrudge anyone for personal taste. Guitars are too much fun.

One element of "relic-ing" that doesn't exist anymore is the smoky bars we played in back in the day when everyone smoked everywhere. When you spend 4 hours a night in a room with 500 people puffing away on Marlboro reds, it builds up that amber color everyone wants pretty quick. That's a good thing though, I'm glad we've changed the mindset about smoking in my lifetime. That aside, I took good care of my guitars, they didn't get bashed up like the fake relics are now. Good video, subbed!

It's also about the feel. A good relic makes the guitar feel smoother. Like sanding the neck.

If you like it, go for it. If you like to do it yourself - get a nitro finish guitar and abuse it a little. If you don't like it, get a poly finish and it will always stay nice if you treat it nice.
There is one for everybody. No one needs to cry.
