When immigration lawyers become the target of far right extremists the rule of law itself is under attack. Like a sudden and violent summer storm without apparent end this week's crisis threatens on so many fronts. With thirty potential points of unrest being monitored tomorrow
it raises the question on when and how order can be restored. The clashes with police and the attacks on Muslim communities and asylum seekers, have been described by senior police officers as a national critical incident. While the desecration of graves is an echo of a very dark past. Tonight we hear from one family.

The poor tear themselves apart while the rich laugh. They want a working class divided.

Inequality fuels hatred, it thrives on division, it feasts on scapegoats.

Not all are far right - a lot of labour voters agree with them (no to illegal immigration), but also think the violent vandals are scum bags. You can be angry without being far right or racist.

I live in a rural part of Canada and my doctor is an expat from the UK. I asked her why she left the UK and she said "because the UK is a sinking ship." That was 6 years ago lol

It's increasing poverty, unemployment, and hopelessness. It stems from years of economic austerity, social, and policy decisions, most of the blame lies at the feet of the former Conservative government. The country's economic foundation has been eroded by decades of deindustrialisation, leading to job losses and a shift towards low-wage, insecure employment. This economic decline has been compounded by harsh Tory welfare reforms and austerity measures (I Daniel Blake), which have reduced support for vulnerable households and cut essential public services. Rising living costs, particularly for food and energy, further strained already tight budgets.

The country's challenges are further exacerbated by rising rates of ill health and disability linked to rising poverty, a significant skills gaps, and low educational attainment, which create barriers to economic mobility. The COVID-19 pandemic intensified these pre-existing problems, deepening inequalities and financial hardship. Together, these factors create a self-reinforcing cycle of deprivation, where poverty is often passed on between generations, making it increasingly difficult for individuals and communities to escape hardship.

People are angry, but they do not see the overall picture as they are in the middle of this storm. Yes, there is a large increase in immigration, of low waged non-EU migrants and asylum seekers, which people feel are getting a favourable treatment, but they are a scapegoat for a much bigger and deeper problem that the poor and disadvantaged are subjected to, that crystallises following a spark into a simple emotive cause and a simple solution.

This violence will lead to a further cycle of marginalisation, where underlying long term problems are not addressed. There is also no quick fix, lowering immigration will not bring jobs and prosperity back to areas suffering from high unemployment, poverty and a cycle of hopelessness.
