Some people here need to get over themselves 😁they’re wrecking me buzz, this lovely lady is seeing Ireland and the Irish exactly how we are seen around the world. No need to patronisingly school her !!
Religion and colonialism are totally embedded in Irish culture,
Though people are not as actively religious as before, it is still part of us and we have a respect for a lot of its customs, st Patricks day, Christmas, Easter, christenings, communion, confirmation, weddings, funerals and many more would rightly suggest to a visitor that religion and the culture are closely connected. And it will still be the same if no one goes to mass next Sunday. I have lived and worked abroad in many countries and we are unique because of this culture, there were lots of good and kind elements we as a people adopted from religion and we are received warmly on a global basis because of it. It wasn’t the religion as such as the nasty feckers who ran it, that was the problem! Unfortunately those manipulative feckers get in everywhere, religion politics, police, business they are the problem not the institutions as such . So don’t try and pick out words or interpretations to have a go at her for, don’t take it too seriously, chill and take it for what it is which is an outsiders view of us, which is very complimentary and very funny just how we like it,
So Hun 😃, I give to you the best compliment you can give in Irish culture, “ You are a bit of Craic” so keep it that way 😁✌️☘️

The Hot Press, it a heated built in cupboard. Normally has a large copper container of hot centrally heated water. People tend to store their towels and beddings in there as as it is hot it prevents the build of of damp and keeps fabric fresh, dry and well, hot.

Great clip. I like you energy when you were explaining the differences. The fact you were able to show joy in those differences says millions about personality. Being able to observe differences and except them is a key component to a better society. Thank you for sharing your adventure.

your joy and smile is infectious! this video made my day a lot better, and as a person that has lived in Ireland their whole life I was really surprised that these things aren't the same in other countries, like I can't even imagine calling a copy a note-book!

To help you with background. Its actually about ethnicity and colonialism and not religion.

The Protestants are mostly (not all but mostly) settlers from Scotland and England (roughly 20%) who came to Ireland in the 17th century. As part of a colonial settlement imposed by the Tudors and then afterwards by the Scottish/English King James. The bitterness comes from the fact that Gaelic or indigenous Irish were thrown out of their land to make way for these settlers. And reduced to starvation levels.

People who are Catholics are mostly largely (1) indigenous Gaelic Irish (roughly 65%) or (2) Normans (roughly 10%). Normans are English settlers from 12th century. They are English by origin but remained Catholic (again mostly not all). However they were prosperous and held significant landholdings. But after the Reformation they were in dispute with the Tudors due to their refusal to recant their religion. Even so, while disputing that one issue they otherwise remained broadly loyal to the English/British crown until modern times.

We use religion as short hand for the confusing melting pot of inhabitants who came at different times. Because we are quite lazy and its simple.

However it can get quite messy as there are a minority of Protestants who are strongly Republican or Pro Irish. Despite their settler origins. Especially in the Republic of Ireland. Then they are also a minority of Catholics (usually of Norman background) who feel very close to the British. So religion doesn't always work as a way to iclassify people's identity.

Indeed many of the anti colonial rebellions in the 18th and 19th centuries against the British were led by Protestant settlers who identified with a separate Irish identity and not the typical British identity of most of their peers. This is highly unusual in world history that members of a ruling class rebel against their own peers in support of the "oppressed". Especially in a colonial environment. But it did happen in Ireland.

Nowadays the actual sectarian bitterness between the various groups is mostly in the North of Ireland (Northern Ireland) in the last 100 years. In the Republic, different groups get along fairly well as they all accept the legitimacy of the Irish Government.

My own background is Indigenous Catholic Irish (paternal) and French Protestant (maternal) although both sides are practicing Catholic for several generations. I am also adopted which makes it 10 xs more confusing and the above is my adopted family background.

Hope this helps.

I wouldnt worry too much about being protestant,
The United Irishmen are held up as heroes of the nation and they were mostly protestant.

I’m Irish and you are very welcome to the country. A couple of things - the form of English we speak here is Hiberno-English, which uses quite a lot of words that are not used elsewhere in modern English. “Press”, for example, is an English word that has died out of use several hundred years ago everywhere else in the English speaking world, but is still used commonly in Ireland. Also, I’m sort of surprised to hear you refer to Irish people as very religious. Compared to what it was even 20 years ago, when the country was in fact very religious in general, I would regard modern Ireland as being mostly secular. I would know very, very few born and bred Irish people below the age of 45 or so that would profess to be in anyway religious and I suspect that most of those below the age of 30 have never been in a church apart from at Christmas time and for occasions like weddings, funerals, baptisms - this is particularly true I think in the big cities.

The day you become fully Irish will be the day that you stop saying ‘Do you understand?’ but say instead ‘You know, that sort of thing?’. You’re almost there though! 💚🤍🧡

Your joy is beautiful!! I adore this video!

As an Irish person, I would also just like you and anyone that has, or will call Ireland home at any point, to know that as far as I’m concerned; the moment you step onto Ireland’s soil, it is your home for however long you need it and whenever you come back. The Ireland I love and work for, is an Ireland where everyone is treated with love and respect. You do not need a piece of paper to be a citizen, Ireland is home and refuge to whoever needs it. Welcome home; I hope you have felt you have been welcomed and cared for ❤️

I really enjoyed running into your channel and watching this video. Yes Irish people are very lovely and respectful when it comes to things that matter like religion and funeral. I was surprised in my first from days in Dublin seeing the gospel being preached almost everyday till date. That you won’t see in most developed countries. Thanks for sharing sis, now part of your fam.
