here is a quick guide on how to apply thermal paste for beginners

a good rule of thumb to follow is a basic dollop in the centre of your CPU
this way you have the thermal paste in the area that is most affected by heat
and yes you do need it

You should try phase-change material Honeywell PTM7950. It comes as a sheet and you don't have to mess around with any applying dots, dashes or crosses. Just cut out a piece the size of the IHS/core and stick it on. Also don't have to worry about whether the paste is too little or too much - it will be just right. In addition, it lasts longer, performs works better than traditional pastes and there is no pump-out effect.

Why bother with which pattern covers the most area is beyond me. Just use the spatula to cover 100% of the CPU.
