🇬🇧 Northanger Abbey follows the 17 year old Catherine Morland and family friends Mr. and Mrs. Allen as they visit the town of Bath, England. As Catherine spends her time visiting newly-made friends, such as Isabella Thorpe, and going to balls she finds herself pursued by Isabella's brother, John Thorpe (also friends with Catherine's brother James), and by Henry Tilney.

Catherine also befriends Eleanor Tilney, Henry's younger sister. Henry Tilney captivates Catherine with his view on novels and his knowledge of history and the world. General Tilney (Henry and Eleanor's father) invites Catherine to visit their estate, Northanger Abbey, which, because she has been reading Ann Radcliffe's gothic novel The Mysteries of Udolpho, Catherine expects it to be dark, ancient, and full of fantastical mystery.

Can we just appreciate the humor in chapter 20 😂 man this is now my favorite book of Austen's!

I'm just up to chapter 6 and stopped to comment. Wow. Just wow.
I haven't read the book, just seen the movie. I've read Austen's more famous books, but these gave me no idea Ms Austen could be so non-stop funny. Every paragraph is dripping with comic irony. Especially when Austen is going for the jugular of those who are anti- novel, even when she is taking a sledgehammer to "The Spectator". So wicked! Not at all what I expected from an author famed for her understatement --such bluntness is really surprising. I had to listen to chapter 5 several times, just to savour the heat.
