Will I lose my memory when I get old? | Head Squeeze

Head Squeeze has partnered with Hello Brain to bring you a series of videos all about that most mystifying of organs, the Brain.

Your brain is more like plasticine than you might think. It bends and adapts when faced with mental challenges, and you can keep it in fit shape by staying mentally active.

It was once thought that the connections in our brain set like concrete as we age. We now recognize that the brain can be remolded throughout life. We call this neuroplasticity and it offers hope.

if you don't wanna get old you should never stop learning, simple as that.

Moral of the story, stay mentally active, don't retire and just sit at home knitting everyday, and get a challenging, non-repetitive job while you're young

yeah you can compensate to appear as mentally able in average as a younger person, but that is the best case scenario. i know from experience, how my parents age and my coworkers. they often amaze me by thinking outside the box when solving problems but then i realize that they are just using old neural circuitry specially tailored to solve their task, i realize that they solved it because of experience. but when they are forced to incorporate new rules in their work, to read and understand a manual for a machine for example, they fail miserably. they end up in a loop of trying a thing they know to do well, then get confused about why is it not working, try to incorporate a new idea, fail, and then go all over again.

I almost get this, hitchhikers guide to the galaxy vibe, from this video. I like it :)

Thanks for the video. I found it quite interesting. I was wondering about how true is the notion that doing "more general things" develops "faculties", and it develops our ability regarding other "specific things" in the same "faculty". For example, the notion implies that doing "jig-saw puzzles" will develop my faculty of "spatial cognition" and will make me better, in general, with tasks related to "geometry". Another example would be that doing taxes will make me better in arithmetic. This will improve my ability in my "mental faculty" of math so I am, in general, better with math problems.

To make it clearer, I'm asking whether or not doing things in a certain category will necessarily make me better in things in the same/similar category. Is learning more of a specific kind of thing, where learning and practicing, say, a certain process in algebra will only make me better in doing that certain process, or, is learning more general than that, like, learning a certain process in algebra will make me better in algebra in general, even in algebra questions not related to that certain process mentioned?

Thoughts on this?

Also, I'll check out the hello brain site in my free time. It looks promising.

So that means that I would have to train my brain like a muscle to maintain it as best as I can - kind of like becoming a mental athlete. Then I better start working out! *grabs books*

What is better way for an old person to train his/her brain. Playing games or take a drive around town (and with challenge finding new route every week)?

so what you're saying is if you keep learning new things and doing daily puzzles like on lumosity this would help keep our memories healthy?

The brain is an expensive resource.  As you get older, you have have less of a reason to continue learning and expanding your mind, so roughly by the time you're 30, you know everything you "need" to know, and therefore your brain can start discarding cells and not bother repairing them.  I'd be very interested to see someone who is a highschool dropout and maybe 50 or 60 years old, and see what happens to their brain mass if they tried learning enough to get a diploma.

Video doesn't really address the question in the title...
