This is absolutely infuriating. Because it’s too expensive or too difficult to study women we get the shaft as far as developing a full understanding of women’s bodies. It’s so frustrating.

I have 'high' cholesterol and had been complaining about increased fatigue, and wouldn't take statins.
So, the doctors ordered a contrast CT to show me how my coronary arteries were clogged in hopes of convincing me to take the statins.

My coronary arteries are not only clear, but pristine

BUT they did find a ventricular aneurysm that explains a lot of my symptoms, and they're not bothered to do anything about repairing the aneurysm though.

OMG! I just watched a Ted Talk that is 4 years old by Stacy Sims called Women are not Small Men. She talks about this exact thing of how women are not studied because of their periods. She even addresses fitness at all stages and the misinformation on what’s best. Thank God for Dr. Haver and other women who are educating the world on women.

It’s worse. Men in charge of these would also say that women’s hormones would make the results unreliable and unpredictable. The implication was that it would not be useful for men if women are also studied, so women were left out.

A good example of the shame and secrecy towards women's issues is how she whispers the word "cycles" in a medical conversation

I argued this with my preceptor during my APPEs in pharmacy school. I told him they don’t research women because it’s too much work and he claimed it’s only because of reproduction. I told him you can absolutely study women and the risk benefit is lower to just study women than* to give medications that at best do nothing for them and at worst harm them. I feel vindicated.

Disgusting and complete and total malpractice. The gaslighting that we all have endured at the hands of the pharmaceutical companies and corporations is staggering. I am so thankful for the rise in YouTube and the ability of these podcasters and medical professional for putting this information out for the general public.

Just as confirmation of her example - I went through early menopause (42) and immediately cholesterol shot up and I developed type 2 diabetes...I've been on statins and metformin now for four years and I truly feel these therapies are just treating the end product of something deeper going on in my body due to hormonal changes, not just cholesterol and blood sugar. We need more studies on menopausal women!

"It's too expensive, so we just fudged it." That's what I'm hearing.

My doc literally tried to prescribe statins and SSRI for my sudden high cholesterol, anemia, stiff shoulder, belly fat gain, brain fog, and sudden onset of depression. I told her I think it's early perimenopause and I'd like regular blood work done to get a baseline. She said that's not necessary. me: *bangs head on wall*

Statins gave me hip pain that was vmisdiagnosed as Bursitis. I threw so much money into treatment for that for four years, until I finally saw a 60 Minutes segment about all the side effects of statins. I had ALL the symptoms listed! I stopped the statins and within two weeks I was pain free!

There is no way they should infer information like that. It sounds dangerous.

General practitioner wants me off HRT because of the potential hazards BUT wants me on statins despite the known hazards

After heart attack I was put on simvastatin. Before it was realized that this drug was causing me confusion, memory and concentration issues I was diagnosed with vascular dementia. It took 6-8 months after stopping the drug I started feeling like myself again. Thankful to my primary care doctor who didn’t buy into dementia diagnosis and looked closer at the interactions of my medications. Now I see this video and I wonder how many other women have experienced this. I actually lost my job because of the conditions I suffered.

Exactly. I'm noticing that even diets that are ok for my husband to do are NOT ok for me.

I left a practice once they prescribed me a statin. I did a lot of research, realized the risk not worth the gain. Found a D. O. Who agreed with me - happy ever since.

This is mind boggling. More studies are needed now, so the women of the future have better educated medical providers!!

I actually finished menopause and my cholesterol went up. I asked him if he had one post menopausal lady patient that had not had the same thing. He cocked his head a minute and said no. I refused to take them. I also refused hormones. We are designed to go through this change. My blood work has been unchanged for a decade.

Thank you.
I'm post menopausal and my cholesterol went up. My PCP kept wanting me to go on statins, and I kept telling her no. She finally ordered a calcium cardiac test, and I'm good.
