I have started a small Orchard also. A few years ago I took a grafting class at Seed Savers in Iowa. Hands on grafting and I brought home trees I grafted. Emla 7 root stock. Growing very slowly but still alive. I have been buying large potted trees from a local Nursery, Prudential, in Vicksburg, MI. I planted a Cortland last fall after picking apples the size a softball. I just went back yesterday and bought a Meteor cherry and a Red Haven peach. Planted 2 Blue crop blueberries this AM. Taking advantage of the rain in the MI forecast. Thanks for the great videos

Great video! 👍 I planted a pear, an apple, a couple of cider apple trees and a crabapple earlier in 2022 here in the south of the UK. The crabapple helps with pollination due to a long flowering time and the wildlife will enjoy the fruit. 🍎🍐

I would like someday to have apples, peaches, cherries sweet & sour, plums, pawpaws & avacado trees. And a pear or 2. Lol Already started with mulberry & grapes. Also hope to have almond & black walnut. Already growing are pecan & Filbert/Hazelnut. Really no room on my homes rented town lot but dreams are a beginning to the future.

Take corrugated drain tile tubing cut them to length then cut a slit down through lengthwise. It makes great rabbit barrier around the trunks of young trees. I have great success the ward off rabbits and mice.

I cannot stop visualizing Bon Ross when your videos are playing 😊 Love the progress of the orchard💚 I haven’t decided which trees I would like on my property as of yet. 🤔 I’m leaning towards dwarf varieties.👌🏾 Great video

You are extremely lucky rabbits haven’t girdled your trees. Several years ago we had a bad winter and the rabbit population we have girdled one of our favorite apple trees. Come spring we put wire cages around the remaining fruit trees. We also have a huge problem with stone fruit bores. They have killed two peach trees and a cherry tree. Kind of frustrating to say the least. Good luck with your orchid 💚🙃 I also live in Michigan and there are also a lot of peach tree orchids around here. While they don’t keep as well as apples, they do make lovely jam, pie filling and canned peaches. Oh the wonderful taste of your own canned peaches, nothing compares 💚🙃

Planted cherries and peaches last year. Purchased apples, plums, and pears yesterday. Making a hedge between our house and the neighbor using blueberries, goji, elderberry and bush cherries. Blueberries are here. Been raining for three days now so will have to wait a week or so. Great video and content.

Was a good watch, we are putting 7 fruit trees into the front yard, I got sick of the grass, but they are multi grafts so we will have 15 different fruits.

Although it was nice to know someone else uses the tape measure technique to get the spacing. We are lucky in terms of pests, we are in Australia, we don't have to worry about deer here and the rabbits don't enter the suburbs, but we have to deal with flying foxes, large birds and possums stealing the fruit.

Was also interesting your reasoning of the more mature trees, we ended up with the smaller versions, as from experience they tend to grow a lot faster and stronger than the mature, but the mature you can get crops from a hell of a lot sooner. Guess its a balancing act.

Heads up on throwing fruit to the animals- I recommend cutting them in half, stepping on them or throwing them hard enough to crack open. The flat teeth of grazing animals don't have the best grip on smooth fruit and when they bite down it can cause the fruit to be slide back into the throat. I've seen our cows choke on apples that weren't smashed enough and growing up my dad had a family cow that died choking on an apple.

I am researching my new orchard. Why such wide spacing? I understand that commercial growers are now planting fruit trees much closer together and getting higher per acre yields. Some home orchard as close as 2 to 4 feet. They are controlling height by pruning so fruit can be picked from the ground with out ladders. Enjoy your orchard!

Hope to have space for a small orchard when we find a place with some more land.

I planted 1 apple tree last year. This year, I planted another apple, a cherry and a peach. I'm taking it slow like you.

Bees will help your trees bare fruit sooner. We have 3 apple trees that did nothing for a few years, until we got bees. Last year we had apples, ugly apples, but apples nonetheless.
