T-Mobile 5G Home Internet Review: Is it worth it now?

The T-Mobile 5G Home Internet service plan is a great option for a lot of people. The new Home Network 5G gateway is wifi 6 as well and the connection is really good. There are essentially no data caps, no speed limits and a lot of options. The speed is from the LTE towers as well as any 5G towers in your area and during high traffic times, you could be slowed down and the speeds are never really guaranteed. The price point and accessibility via cell towers makes it a great option for rural areas but how is it in a metropolitan city like NYC and is it worth it. Let's review and setup the home internet device together.

Great vid! Just installed mine yesterday inside my TV’s Media Stand hidden behind one of the doors. Have about 12 devices connected. In terms of connection and speed, I’m getting full bars with lows of 155mbps and highs of 340mbps down on average. Uploads are 11mbps to 65mbps. I’m guessing the lows and highs are attributed to the modem toggling between 4G and 5G. My 5G iPhone consistently gets 5G speeds of at least 450mbps down and 50mbps up. Wish the modem was just as consistently high. That said, for $50mo. compared to the higher prices of Comcast and Verizon I have zero complaints at the moment. Plus install and usability is incredibly fast and easy. Just plug it in and you’re pretty much off and running. Super simple.

The main purpose of the battery is to go around your house to find the best signal spot (mostly close to window) once you get the best spot, you can now place your gateway in that spot and find a closest outlet to plug-in.

Buy a cheap enclosed plastic like weather proof box from your local hardware store and mount it on your roof or outside for best reception.

Thanks for the review. I’ve been using this in suburban PA and am in an ultra capacity area. I’m getting 600-700 Mbps down and 30-40 Mbps up. Ping is about 35, so plenty low for gaming. Overall, my experience has been great. I’m only 10 days in, so will reserve judgment until it proves itself over time…

I just ordered this. I get full bars of 5G on my LG Wing in my house with around 100-200 down. I Hope I get those same speeds on T-Mobile internet :)

Thanks, but we need some ping/ICMP results 😬
Speedtest is nice, but obviously it's meaningless without checking for packet loss and ICMP response time. Thanks!

I've been running this for roughly 6 months now and about 12 devices and it's been great, I'm a gamer and have little to no issues and not enough to make it a habit. It's not perfect but any means and weather WILL affect it. I will lag with heavy storms and clouds. I mounted a CPU fan on the bottom to help keep it cool and even have a signal booster on my roof which helped mostly for upload. I have no options minus satellite and starlink and the T-Mobile Internet has been the best. I only average 50mbps down and roughly 2-6 up but I can game with little issues and download stuff pretty quick. I am wanting to try the new modem since you had such good luck with it!

I'm getting 235 download and 95 upload fresh out the box and without finding a special spot to place it. It's been working fine so far for me and my kids needs.

I have the 4g lte gateway. They told me I can not get the 5g gateway even though my next door neighbor has it. Been a customer for 3 months. Usually get around 50-70 down and 10 up. Sadly I live in a rural area so this is the best option for me. Only pay $50/month and out of curiosity I went to check availability for my address and it said not available even though I have had it for 3 months.

My speeds average right now 170. I’m pretty happy and if I can make it work with my vpn for work I’ll completely cancel Comcast. I can’t wait to tell them their upload speeds are just as fast as a 5G network haha (30-40Mbps).

My dad lives in rural Pennsylvania and has been paying a ridiculous amount of money for complete garbage 10 megabit down, 768kbit up from CenturyLink. He just got this and is now clocking 200 megabit. He's in heaven. Not sure how the bandwidth caps work, but he's not a data hoarder or anything.

I am an independent insurance adjuster traveling all over the country, staying in hotels and RV parks, usually with abysmal internet speeds on their wifi networks, and usually ended up using my phone as a hotspot. I thought this might be a great alternative, and boy, I am sold! I was getting a lousy internet connection using my phone hotspot where I was staying in Ga and thought I would try this out. Currently, the speed test shows 181 MPs download and 55 uploads. Before I got this, I looked to see if there was 5g coverage in my area, and the website said no. However, it sure seems to be getting these speeds somehow. I also looked up 5 g coverage throughout the U.S. It looks like the coverage area is extensive, and in all the places I previously have been and had lousy service. The ultimate test will be taking on the road with me and seeing if I get this incredible speed everywhere. I'll keep you informed.

Once Tmobile perfects the home 5g internet and makes it super reliable, I will switch in a heartbeat...unfortunately, in my opinion they are not there yet..

We just got it and we average 2 to 3 bars of signal and can get about 150 to 200 mbps download and 15 to 30mbps upload. We like it

You were wondering about the battery and it's purpose. In some areas companies are required by law to provide x amount of backup time for phone services so that way in an emergency you can still call for help. Also if you have an older alarm system you don't want to be setting those off every time there's a an outage longer than a brownout. Wifi radios use a bit of power so my guess is they cut it off so they can buy cheaper smaller batteries and still meet the legal requirements. I think it's 8 or 12 hours of backup time here, you know in case you've fallen and get up etc.

I’m in NJ and I’m getting over 700. Only paying $50.00 a month… beats the paints off Fios… bye bye Verizon!

its actually your building and direction of home where T -Mobile tower hit signals, i get 500MBPS outside of apartment building but indoor under 50MBPS and i can see T-Mobile tower .

IMO the built-in battery may be used to save its configuration during a power outage. The battery properly doesn't hold enough power to keep the Internet service running.

Is it all wireless? Cuz I don’t have fiber optic cable for high speed internet running through my Area.
