If your framing is a box, just measure the diagonals, corner to corner. If they are equal it’s square. That doesn’t make it perpendicular to the house. Your method ensures it is at a right angle to the house.

The 3 4 5 technique also works for other sizes too. All you do is multiply the same number by 3 the same number by 4 and the same number by 5. So something like 15, 20, 25 works also (5×3=15 5×4=20 and 5x5=25 just a example) another way is to measure diagonally across Pont to point and do the same the opposite direction and they should be the same. You may have to adjust and split the difference but you will be square if you get them the same

I'm laying my composite now. Had the breaker board for the top of stair lined up to square the rest of boards. Just checked and my top of stair is out 3 inches as it runs.

There is a type of square that is easily made and cannot be 'bumped' out of square . It's a little more difficult to understand but it's very accurate - It consists of 2 pieces of thin timber (1 long and 1 half as long) the smaller is loosely bolted in centre of the longest piece forming a Tee. When you swing the small arm parallel with the long arm they are trimmed to be the same length. This means the short arm when moving marks a semi circle arc. ALL ANGLES IN A SEMICIRCLE ARE RIGHTANGULAR so the end of the sort arm and one long arm are positioned on your straight wall or string line then the last end is always a right-angle to the end of the short arm. It is very easy to make and stores flat. I cant find any pictures on Google sorry!

Crossline laser level (with xy 360 degree vertical lasers) + laser receiver to find the laser in sunlight + manual high precision rotation stage (to control spin of laser level) .... you gotta spend some money but its a very quick and very accurate way to find the 90 degree point

You can’t use 3 4 5 because of bows in the lumber unless your deck is 3’x4’. Best way to square anything is with a construction calculator, enter one dimension as rise the other as run and hit diagonal. Or you can use A2+B2=C2 on a graphing calculator but if you’re doing construction you should have a construction calculator and if you don’t then you shouldn’t be doing construction.

The 3:4:5 triangle is the best way I know to determine with absolutely certainty that an angle is 90 degrees.

5 years from now we just have to point the LIDAR scanner of our iPhone to the deck, and it will tell you if it’s square or not...
