10GBE Home Network: Network Card Cooling Upgrade With Noctua NF-A4x10 PWM

This is a Sponsored Video!

10GBE network cards can overheat. Lets solve that by installing active coolers! The Noctua NF-A4x10 PWM is a really nice 40mm cooler.
I use 2 10GBE networkcards Chelsio T420-CR and Solarflare S7120

Love Noctua too. They are a bit on the pricey side and some people don't like the color but hey, it functions really good and i think the color makes it a bit unique to other fans

Funny that AkBKukU is doing a 10gbit file server at the same time as you and he uploaded a video about adding fans onto his 10gbit cards just a day before you

The workgroup server I have downstairs is full of old Nidec fans I pulled out of PS/2 Model 25 systems I bought for parts. While not exactly quiet due to their blade geometry they make a very pleasant low whirring noise.

I’ve been running Chelsio cards like this 24x7 for a few years. They need active cooling unless your case airflow is cyclonic.

Thanks... I need to do this for my 10Gbe NIC. The 92mm fan I have pointed at the NIC in my server was easy enough, but putting a 40mm on the ASUS NIC my workstation won't be as simple, but I'm running into too many overheating issues to ignore.

6:09 The NF-A4x10 manual says not to connect it to the computer's conventional outputs because this could damage it, because it is only 5V, how do I know that the motherboard input you showed is 5V and not 12V? (sorry i am dumb)

Interesting! I originally did a similar fan mod with noctuas nf-a4-10s as well but they added too much z height to my Intel X540-T2 cards making them no longer single slot. In the end I ended up buying a few decommissioned old blower fan style GPUs, Nvidia Quadro k420s. I drilled out matching holes for the original heatsink on the gpu cooler heatsinks then tapped the holes I made with the shortest m.2 standoffs I could find. After getting them in there I used the m2 spring screws from the gpu cooler and the small nylon washers to fasten the cooler to the card then spliced the fan wire and soldered on a standard pwm fan connector. Then I could control the fans through the motherboard and it keeps the NICs cool af.

I think I use a similar fan on my Voodoo3 2000, it is really silent. I used fitting screws to fit it.

Something about 10 GbE NIC's and "retro machines" in the channel name just won't add up :D
