A subway passenger, 43 year-old John Rote, is under arrest after he fired two rounds at a subway robber who was reportedly trying to rob a woman on a Manhattan subway platform.

The situation unfolded when Rote observed 49-year-old Matthew Roesch holding open an emergency gate, only to demand money from a woman before allowing her entry onto the subway. Authorities reported that as the woman tried to bypass Roesch, he confronted her, stating, "If you don't give me a dollar, I'm going to take your purse."

Upon witnessing this confrontation, Rote immediately shouted, "Get away from her!" and eventually fired two rounds down the platform.

In defense of his actions, Rote's attorney, Marie Calvert-Kilbane, stated that Rote has been a legal owner of the firearm for 13 years.

News around New York posed headline questions of "Subway vigilante or hero?"

The president of the transit authority stated that, "weapons shouldn't be on the streets of New York" and that New York needs to get a handle on the gun issues in the city alluding to law abiding citizens carrying guns to defend themselves.

Despite having no prior criminal record, Rote is now facing charges, including "criminal possession of a weapon and menacing." If convicted, he could be sentenced to three and a half years in prison.

When people take their safety against criminals into their own hands as a result, the government treats the good Samaritan more like a criminal than the actual criminals.

Whether you like it or not, you are you're own first responder. No one is coming to save you and apparently even if someone does come to save you, if that person uses a gun to do it, the government in New York is saying they are going to treat that person like a criminal.

Lets all take a moment to reflect that the police guaranteed, worked harder to find this man, then they did to find the woman's attacker.

This is downright shameful on NYC. Shameful.

Whats dangerous is trusting law enforcement and corrupt DA's!

Take note, they revealed the identity of the vigilante, but the mugger with a serial record that everyone should avoid gets to keep his anonymity. What an injustice.

If cops don't want you stopping crime... Then they should be sued every time they wasn't there to stop it.

This isn't a vigilante, this is a concern citizen protecting his own community.

The way the newscasters label this guy as "the subway vigilante" and the criminal labeled as just some mugger explains a LOT to how the NYPD is taught to act.

Vigilante… sounds like a hero! Nobody else was there to help her! The city should be charged for failing to protect citizens from criminals! Not the other way around!

What's wild is that they know that mugger operates in that train station regularly yet no one has arrested him.

This is so wrong, no cops around and a Good Samaritan tries to help and goes to jail.

This is the city I grew up in . The previous mayor was even asked multiple times if he believes in the right to self defense. He said New Yorkers “have a right to feel safe “. Well they don’t even have that. That’s how dumb politicians are in New York .

Disgusting abuse of authority. The prosecutor must be disbarred and investigated.

I love it how, in NYC, anyone who interferes with criminal activities is a "vigilante." Can we appreciate how quickly the cops found this "vigilante" and not the real criminal here?

If the people can't protect themselves then politicians, famous people or anyone else shouldn't be allowed to have armed security. This man should be applauded not arrested.

Can we take a moment to notice that the police worked harder to find and arrest this man vs the actual

Why a Good Samaritan is being paraded as a criminal for standing up for a victim is beyond me. And the criminal will live on to keep robbing others.

"No good deed shall ever go unpunished." A harsh reality.

I live in NY. It’s the city where criminals are the victims, and the victims are the criminals. SCOTUS ruled that the NY gun laws are unconstitutional. What does the governor do - she makes every location where criminals thrive no gun zones. A governor DOES NOT have the authority to override a Supreme Court’s decision.
