How to Get Better at Singing (12:51)

Many students wonder why they're not getting better at learning how to sing. It's a really good question especially if you're trying to learn on your own. And in fact as a professional voice teacher that’s taught over a thousand students, I can tell you that it can be really difficult to learn on your own without personal feedback.

So today, I'm going to tackle the three biggest mistakes that I made when I was first starting to learn how to sing and how you can avoid them. I'll even use real world examples of YouTube videos that I watched when I was learning how to sing. then I'll show you how to avoid these common mistakes.

When I was first starting off, I made three huge mistakes when I was learning to send.

The first mistake was that I was reading online forums like Reddit and Ultimate-Guitar. It's a problem with this was it was basically a bunch of angry people yelling at each other telling you that you had to feel the music more. But I was already doing that.

The next mistake that I made was I went down the YouTube rabbit hole. I was so excited when I first found YouTube. But after a few weeks of working through the exercises I realized I gotten totally lost.

The last mistake that I made was I actually decided to say what one teacher was saying about singing and I bought her DVD. But she spent more time bragging about her famous clients than actually teaching. All this frustration led me to making the biggest decision that would change my singing career. I decided that I would take a voice lesson.

The reason that you're not getting better at singing is that the voice needs to be built in a specific way. There's actually a step-by-step methodology to becoming a better singer. And most of the time, you don't know where you are in this progression if you don't have personal feedback.

So I want to introduce to you my perfect performance pyramid. At the bottom you can see that you need to master Rhythm and pitch. That builds up to chest voice and head voice. That builds up to your mixed voice. That leads to vocal effects. This leads to vocal style. And if you put all of these pieces together you will end up with a much more powerful and more perfect performance.

This is basically like needing to master all elements to become the Avatar.

I'm actually impressed he turned all that booing and "throwing-things-at-him" thing into motivation/determination. Most people would have just given up! Props to Ramsey 👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻

Matt:"I'm gonna tell you why you suck at singing"
Also Matt:"I think your amazing and I love you"
Me: *trying to slowly analyze what he just said*

I think the performance pyramid needs to have a Level 0. Level 0 deals with the setup of the vocal instrument (i.e. everything that needs to happen prior to making sound). Posture, breathing correctly for singing. It's easy to ignore this aspect.

Matt has an authenticity about him. I think many of us watch many of these videos by different people. Matt explains things as someone who has no other angle other than to help people sing better.

I’ve spent so many hours studying YouTube videos and comparing notes. I even compiled an archive of exercises, so I can build my own daily singing lessons without any experience with or basic fundamental knowledge of vocals or even music. I knew absolutely. I was a totally clean slate, and after HOURS studying videos made by professional vocal instructors, this is the most useful and impactful one I’ve seen. Learning to sing without an instructor is incredibly difficult, but videos like this are so helpful. Thank you!

Your channel, Ken Tamplin, Dr Dan are my top 3 videos for learning how to sing better you all bring something to the table worth learning and give lessons to improve and get better all of you are great teachers.
The key to learning and improving is by practicing it live and with a music teacher because you have no clue what you might be doing wrong without a teacher

Someone threw a can at you?! 🥺who does that?! It’s amazing you stuck with it...I’ve been a songwriter all my life but always hated my voice. So previous lessons never helped but I’m finally in a place of acceptance & am learning a lot w my vocal coach. Your videos really Help reinforce what she says. Thx! ☺️

I just had my third online lesson with Matt and it's been great for making real improvements. I realize this will sound like a total shill post, but I've been using the structured exercises from his Master Your Voice program for daily practice, combined with the guidance and feedback from his one-on-one lessons and it's exciting how quickly I'm making gains. Yeah, it's costly but well worth it if you are serious about wanting to sing. I'm already budgeting to continue my lessons for as long I keep progressing. I was completely embarrassed to sing in front of someone, especially with non-flattering exercises and lip bubbles, but Matt creates a very open and comfortable environment. Again, not a paid endorsement! (Which is exactly what paid endorsement would say...)

You know... I was the same way, searching for videos to help me get to these really advanced things like whistle register and all that, and even though I haven't watched the whole video yet, I still think this is helping a lot. I'll stick to this channel as much as I can.

Love his story and his vulnerability. I am new to this world. And now realize the music industry does a huge disservice to people. It takes expensive equipment, an expensive team and many times the voice is computerized. He is so real and authentic. Yes don’t go down the you tube rabbit hole. I’m beginning vocal lessons and have been watching Cheryl porter and my self esteem flattens even tho I have come a long way. Love to everyone, don’t give up, you’re doing this out of love xoxox

Yo Matt, I just saved a pic of your Pyramid. Thanks for sharing this with me. I could probably show this video to my coach and maybe we can develop an idea on like Pitch and Rhythm. Thank you again for sharing this with all of us and I wish you the best of luck with your students!

You were super specific on everything you mentioned. I made the same mistakes as you did and I didn't realise until NOW how much I've been repeating the same mistake for several weeks now. From watching youtube tutorials, reading through the singing subreddit for hours, I've also been singing songs out of my range without any knowledge on pitch lmaooo. I'm disappointed at myself but stumbling upon this video made me change my mindset and my method. I can't thank you enough, it literally almost feel like I found the right path 😭

Thanks Ramsey! I really enjoyed your video. I also think that a key thing is to be willing to be seen :B that's a major one for me, because I used to not enjoy having attention towards me and now that I'm starting to learn how to sing, I'm working on enjoying that aspect as well and sit with the "uncomfortable" feeling of being seen or "judged"... I think once you also work on that you can start building on technique n__n
