Easy waterproof Cable and Wire Splice

If you've ever accidentally chopped through a wire or electrical cable, you know how much fun it can be to try to repair it so that it stays waterproof, dust proof, weatherproof, etc.

I recently had just such a fun experience myself. It turns out that there are quite a few nice products out there to make the splicing process WAAAAY easier.

Keep in mind that the type of splice you use depends greatly on the application - and even the type of wire (solid vs stranded).

A wire splice for an automotive-type application must be pretty strong, because vibration is obviously an issue.

An underground electrical cable doesn't have to withstand vibration, but it definitely needs to be waterproof!

Note that I forgot to mention one product in the video: 3M Scotchlok connectors. They are good for wires up to 1.5mm^2, and they're water resistant. BUT, they may not be very good for high-vibration applications due to the way the blades inside bite into the copper wires. These are the same type of connectors your phone company tech usually uses for phone line wire connections, only bigger.

The 3M product (scotchcast) is great. Its a 2 component PU resin. Set times are between 15 minutes and a hour. Epoxy and EPDM can also be used. I normally use it with shrink tube: shrink one end first, fill it with resin, and shrink the other side. This work fine, even kilometers under water. And use crimp connection where you can. soldering is not recommended.

Would be great to know the names of the hardware...? ‘This guy’ when referring to the piece of equipment doesn’t really help?

About IP classification, if you are not planning on using your connection, permanently under water, ill recommend IP66 instead, it is almost as watertight but are much tougher and protective against tare and ware.

, thanks for the video, I cut thru a gardening client’s outdoor lighting wire while digging up some perennials, do I need to turn off any fuse or electrical source to the lights before making the repair? 🌺

Wow! What a hack job. Under 20 bucks will buy you a proper heat shrink direct burial UF splice kit. Works on 14/2 to 8/3 UF cable. Cobbling together some splice reducers, tape silicone and a shopping bag is surely UL listed. NOT!
