i buy movies to own and watch, and I've recently started picking up more DVDs than blu rays. it's taking a minute to adjust to the quality, but i find once the movie itself gets going i stop caring and just enjoy the content. i will occasionally upgrade my DVDs if i find them in a store for a good price i deem worth it, but when it comes to buying a bunch of horror movies i love all at once DVDs are on top. sometimes with some films like house of 1000 corpses for example the graininess actually adds to the experience. DVDs are still movies regardless of the quality and watching them for the content is the main purpose anyway

I used to have lots of dvds and gave them away and now I am kind of regretting it. I also had bluray's but sold a lot due to 'clutter'. I would like to restart again but mostly dvds unless it is something I really truly want on bluray. And I want to be very selective not to 'clutter' up my shelves as I am a minimalist in many ways. Also to think that I was at a festival earlier this year when the director of Evil Dead Rise was giving a talk and screening the film in a village hall and Instead I sat on the grass as I had somehow gone into one of my internalised shut off moments. I have regretted many things and opportunities that have come my way over the years haha.

I agree man. Not everything is going to be on blu ray either. A lot of hidden gems.

I still buy DVDs too for those same reasons.

I bought a Sony Blu-Ray player that plays all regions and it upscales DVD & Blu-Rays.
My Xbox series X sucks at playing DVD because it doesn’t upscale and you can see the big difference in having an independent Blu-Ray.
Sony UBP-X700/M is the one I bought, am currently backing up my DVD & Blu-Ray disc probably gonna take me all year to do but am also gonna look into upscaling my old DVD digitally in the future.
I like the menu options but maybe I’ll upscale the movies and tv shows and have my own server.

The other benifit of having physical media is that there are still some movies out there (both good and bad) that still never had a streaming release, or in some cases, doesn't even have a Blu-ray release. This is very notable in the UK too, for example Halloween: The Curse Of Michael Myers (1995) has a DVD version in the UK but no Blu-ray version as of now, at least in a standalone form anyway, don't know about it for the Halloween Collection though as that seems new (with the new BBFC logos on the discs).
I believe in extreme rare cases, they may also be some films out there that still only exist on VHS and no DVD, Blu-ray or streaming release exists, don't know if that's true though.

Same is true with video games, where games on demand is pretty much what most people opt for nowadays, but I still use physical media for games (including new releases), unless the game is digital only of course. And obviously for older systems, physical media would be the only legitimate way of playing these games without hacking and/or homebrew backup methods.

The bad thing about physical media though is that discs can easily be broken and may possibly not work at all in the future (even if you take good care of them) due to something called disc-rot.

I've been buying DVDs since the 90s and blu-rays none of these streaming services have any of the movies i want to watch like 70s and 80s European horror movies or action sci-fi and martial arts flicks that are forgotten about now

I only buy blurays if they have unrated or extended directors cuts just like Deadpool 2 or the wolverine or sin city

I understand why you buy dvds but blu rays are so much better

Dvd in most cases is still better quality then streaming.

I guess. Personally I don’t see the point of “quantity over quality”. I’d rather spend a few $ more for a Blu-ray which will look great for many decades to come. DVDs were mastered during the analog age and that tech is very old and difficult to make compatible with tech moving forward resulting in continuing image deterioration as the years go by. But you do you my dude. No hate

I want to get DVDs but my parents wouldn’t allow me to buy any more cuz everything’s online which is sad I literally grew up on dvds

Great vid. Completely understand why you still buy collect and buy dvds. I buy Blu-rays because unlike you I will watch them sometimes. Or I just collect them sometimes.

Edit: also love that thumbnail! 😂

Its untrue that people "don't" buy physical media anymore. There are many of us collectors who continue to thrive. I'll never be a streamer.
