The construction took 5 years (1931-36) during the Great Depression. It was a massive effort of design, involving thousands of workers, and cost $49 million ($836 adjusted for inflation). Its located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona.

Grand Coulee Dam is the largest concrete structure ever built. Several other dams in the world are larger, but they include earthen berms (when completed 2009, the Three Gorges Dam in China will be roughly three times the size of Grand Coulee). Grand Coulee is 450-500 feet thick at its base and 30 feet thick at the top, and it contains 11, 975, 521 cubic yards (9, 155, 944 cubic meters) of concrete, three times as much as Hoover Dam.

WOW such WOW. I am clearly amazed as how much work went into it. and how it will never happen again.

I bet it would take billions of dollars and ten years to build it now days.
The Union workers would take their time and with all the safety regulations that are in place, and this thing is still holding strong.

I think when it was all said and done it actually cost about 165 million which is sad because the new I-11 bypass bridge to go around the damn instead of driving over it like you could before 2010 costs $240 million. So 165 mil to build one of the biggest damn in the US and 240 million to build a bridge 70 years later.

The largest dam ever proposed would have been the German project of Atlantropa, damming the Strait of Gibraltar and draining much of the Mediterranean Sea into desalination plants to support farming in the Sahara Desert.

A fascinating subject of engineering. Question i would have is how much shipping would be effected out of the Suez canal, and if plans to have a canal exist going out to the Atlantic Ocean

It's a false statement, the largest hydroelectric dam which is also the largest concrete dam in the US, would be the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington State.

Davis got duped and the dam named after j Edgar Hoover even though Davis did all the leg work all Hoover did was sign authorisation for it to be built a half a second act of signing ink on paper . Ridiculous really
