That is just one angle of a subject that is so stupidly confused that I'm amazed any apologist brings it up. A lot of theists will claim that atheists think they are nothing but animals, while also thinking of themselves as their own gods. Meanwhile, theists will often flagelate themselves with the idea that they are wretched and worthless, only given meaning by God, while also thinking that the entire universe revolves around them.

This take has always been so wild to me when I get approached by evangelists.

I grew up Christian and was terrified as an adult when I started doubting the existence of God. It took me a while to realize my fear wasn't because I was scared of not going to heaven, it was because I was scared of the idea that I am here by complete accident and there isn't order to any of this. It was really difficult to reconcile that and not feel that everything is basically meaningless, even life itself.

It took a lot of work to realize that the nonexistence of God can actually give life more meaning. If I really am here by mere chance, then that's pretty cool that I actually get to participate in this thing called life because I could've just as easily not existed. If god didn't create me, then my existence isn't inevitable, it's lucky. And in that sense, I should be grateful to even be alive. And if this life is all we get, then that just motivates me to make the most of the time I do have.

In addition, I did not anticipate the benefit that would be provided from separating my morality from religion belief. It has allowed me to see things from a more objective perspective without religious influence. I have become a much better person since I replaced God as the one to hold myself accountable for my actions and beliefs.

the last time JWs came to my door they wanted to talk about high cholesterol and my health. i told them that was indeed a good subject as i had high cholesterol. then i proceeded to educate them on how i, and thousands of other firefighters across the planet, sprayed a toxic chemical that is now in the blood of virtually every human being on this planet. i asked them how it could be that their all knowing, loving, and benevolent god could allow this to happen. i opined that their god must be planning yet another worldwide flood to wash away the toxic chemical we spread. i informed them that the chemical we spread is known as the "forever" chemical in that the electro-chemical bond of the toxic chemical is so strong that it will not degrade in nature. it will build up, "bioaccumulate", in the human body until it begins to destroy it through cancers, high cholesterol, and diseases and that the only way that has so far been discovered to rid the body of this toxic chemical is, basically, bloodletting.
i informed them that as a documented catholic (i have my pedigree papers) and non-believer of the bible i found it impossible to even consider that there is an all-knowing, loving, and benevolent god and that unless and until people realize that religion and politics are mind control for the masses to make you believe that in order for YOU to be a "good person" YOU need to do what THEY tell you.
then i wished them a good life and advised them to get their blood tested for PFAS and join a lawsuit against their REAL TRUE gods- 3M, Dupont, Chemours, et al.
it's been three years since that day. havent seen them around...
