Interior Design Trends I Love (but Most People Hate) | Julie Khuu

In today’s video, I will be discussing all the design trends I love, but most people hate. And by most people, I am referring to most people that actually comment on my YouTube channel lol. It’s no secret that I am a maximalist, but that doesn’t mean I don’t design minimal interiors for my clients. The goal of my channel is to help you celebrate your individuality, understand the function of your space, and source the most inspired furnishings and home decor, no matter what anyone else thinks or says!

What did you think of my list today? Agree or disagree? Should I turn this episode into a whole new series? Comment below!

Hi 👋🏻 my name is Julie and I’m a maximalist lol 😂 Does your style fall more towards minimalism or maximalism?

I used to be a minimalist, but have come to love maximalism. I also love everything you listed. All those colors, fabrics and textures make any room look absolutely stunning. Minimalism is nice and clean, but only maximalism can give you the WOW factor.

I love minimalism but still tune in to your videos, Julie. They're very useful whatever your aesthetic.

Maximalism, velvet, gilt furniture, antique mirrors, lacquer and leopard! This is my living room. Great video Julie.

I love that you make it so wonderful to “love what YOU love” no matter what our styles are. I’m a minimalist through and through but I really enjoy seeing other styles and options even though they may not be “my” preference. It’s great to appreciate another viewpoint and see how a certain aesthetic can resonate with our soul and bring out the happy! So cool that you encourage everyone to build design around what they love and bypass the ‘trend of the moment.’ Thanks Julie!!

I’m a maximalist always have been. When I downed sized into a condo I sold so many beautiful pieces. I was going to try a more modern less is more idea to make my smaller space look bigger. That lasted 6 months before I started cozying it up again :) now I feel at home.

I agree with evERYthing on your list! ✔️📝I was thinking, “Yes … mmhmm… that’s my girl”, with each item you listed. I’m an artist (and elementary school-art teacher) and I’m here for the styles and revolving aesthetic(s)of design. It’s all art! My kind of lifestyle.💝

I had lacquer furniture in my living and dining room from the 80’s until a few years ago when we down sized. I always felt it was beautiful and different. I got many compliments with my pieces. I now have different furniture, but I did keep my black lacquer buffet table because I just love it. It compliments my new dining set. I’m glad I kept it. I guess I would consider my style between minimalist and maximilist. I do enjoy color!

I hadn’t ever felt compelled to decide which I was but looking at the examples, I got so agitated. I’m a minimalist. That being said, Julie, the examples in most of your other videos do not offend. So maybe it’s more about being super skilled and thoughtful, regardless of which category one falls into. I have deeper and deeper respect for those who are good at this and help those of us who aren’t try to learn. Thank you, Julie!!

Me too! Love french imperial Maximalist! Definitely, you are one of the best. Your pictures are exquisite.
OMG! I Can't Beleive it but we really have the same taste. I do love gilded furnitures and I do it by myself on my wood furniture( no paint on my antics!). They are in Noyer, cherry and mahogany and I don't intend to paint them in grey, White or blue. Doing that to expensive wood furniture is a sacrilege!
Beautiful!

I'm a minimalist but I love to watch different things and I love the fact that everyone has his own taste, in my opinion that's what makes the world cool. I love your videos and your list ❤️

You are NOT alone! I love most of your loves - especially leopard. I am now a maximalist, not an over clutterer but I love color!

Great topic! Ithink many designers end up being maximalist. When you study and are exposed to so many lovey yet different things the inherent excitement of that naturally bubbles up. I personally would call myself a “midi-malist” I am drawn to clean lines and tight color palettes and generally have found that in my own home I am drawn to quieting down the space but also love the spice of something more. I in fashion at least leopard is to me like a good grind of fresh pepper adds a little wang to whatever 👌

OK Finally a design style that bucks the gray-white-beige tsunami that has been flooding us for the last 10-15 years, thank you!

I'm a maximalist by nature who has been learning to incorporate more minimalistic principles in my space/ life! mom + grandma are both maximalists as well + mom instilled a deep love of animal prints (mainly leopard/ zebra) in me!

I too have your videos recommended to me. I have watched a few. I am inspired. But I am such a maximalist that what I’ve seen on your videos didn’t register as maximalist to me, just well fitting decor. I’m subscribing now because I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us maximalists. You know, the ones who love to mix botanicals with natural materials, and walnut, and cherry woods, and paint and wall paper all over.
