New York MTA subway needs safety platform doors

According to MTA statistics, 54 people died and 139 people were injured as a result of being hit by trains in 2012. There have been talks about installing safety doors on the subway platforms in New York City since 2007, however, the MTA has had a high turnover rate and has changed four chairman since then.

Despite the numerous benefits of having safety doors installed, the subway system in New York is old, so to have additional doors in place would lead to extra costs. Also, as its subway trains vary in make and size, the location of where the car doors open varies.
To overcome this obstacle, Platform Dynamic Doors has found a solution. Platform dynamic doors can detect where the train stops and adjust where the platform edge doors open accordingly.

In light of recent subway accidents, Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer has urged the MTA to install safety doors.

IDK why, but they are using Hong Kong's MTR trains.

Singapore already had those since the 1980s, but only underground stations at the time. Elevated stations didn't have them until sometime in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

Benefits and non-benefits: this can stop litter from filling on the tracks, stuff falling on thet racks, etc., etc. The bad thing is where the doors open depending on the size. So get wider doors that detect the position and widness of the doors, or use the same kind of cars every time.

Unfortunately the MTA can’t install these doors because they still run 60 ft long and 75 foot long trains. Until the R68/As retire and the subway only has 60 ft long trains, we’re not gonna see this for awhile!

That’s true when I see teenagers on the train station I’m scared if they drop on the train tracks plus this is true they should put that like that people can’t throw garbage in the train tracks

Somebody was stabbing and commuting arson in a subway train somewhere in Asia recently (I forgot where), however, the passengers had trouble getting over the shield when they tried to escape.

There are certain places implementing this in America, unfortunately, its not utilized in public transport like the metro or subway For example airports that use a train to get from building to building installed safety platform doors. America should really take a lesson from South Korea and implement it in order to dissuade any accidents from occurring

I agree that platform screen doors would be useful for the NYC subway system, but I still don’t expect to see them any time soon. One of the MTA’s biggest reasons of why not to install platform screen doors would be because of the varying train size and I do agree that this fixes it. However, another big factor is cost. It would cost the MTA $26, 000, 000 to install platform screen doors at just one station. Plus, some stations aren’t even compatible with installing them without replacing the station platform because the stations are either too small or cannot support the weight of these doors. Edit: MTA is now planning to install platform screen doors at three stations as a test. This could mean hope for platform screen doors in the future.

These are not practical at all. Some people say it’s just something else the MTA needs to maintain which is absolutely correct. The problem will be when they start malfunctioning at say Times Square at 8:58 am as a packed to the hills 2 train enters the station and now those people can’t get off the train because the protectors don’t go down.

Or maybe the simpler vertically raised rope barrier gates which can be multiple doors wide.
