Native New Yorkers understand that seat is best for avoiding people. If you need to switch cars, or get to the door quickly, only one person can sit next to you. It's perfect. If you want to stay clean don't take the subway.

New Yorker here, can confirm the top comments. If you’re in New York City, you can expect every surface to be dirty whether visible or not. Just deal with it and sit where you want as long as there isn’t piss, shit, or jizz on it

Native New Yorker here - that’s the best seat. Nobody will sit next to you if you sit right in the middle of it, put your bag next to you (holding onto it) and pretend to sleep!
