"line up perfectly so you can get guaranteed access"
Golden rule of the subway is, always let everyone out before getting in. don't block them and force your way in

Another cool hack: you can ask the rats, they know a lot about the subway

I'm a new Yorker and never knew this. Thank you!

The most important subway hack! Don’t stand so close to the tracks in NYC period! Stay away from tracks close to the wall and get closer once the train arrives and stops completely! Unless you want to be pushed on the tracks by some crazy person! Happens like on a weekly basis in nyc now

From a native New Yorker --- do not stand anywhere near the edge of the platform to protect yourself from the crazies who push people on to the tracks ! Move closer to the train once it has entered the station.
Take your earphones off so you are very aware of your surroundings -- put them back on once you are on the train.

Hack 1- get pushed off edge

Hack 2- get cussed out.

Here in Hong Kong we have doors or gates on the side of platforms that open when train doors open which prevents people accidentally falling off or getting pushed off, or any littering (like the bike incident in NYC), and at stations without those doors or gates (which are very rare now, usually on the older stations) there are markings on the ground indicating where boarding passengers must stand, and there is even a gap in the middle that has to be left clear for people getting off. Actually, those markings are on all platforms in every station, so even if you somehow miss the huge sliding doors, you won’t have any trouble finding where to stand

Another tip, if you see someone shirtless sitting by themselves mumbling, they often are a multibillionaire reporter waiting to give a nice person a reward!

Actually the way crime is going in the nyc subway system the REAL hack is never stand on or near the yellow strip. Riders are being shoved from behind onto the tracks! Please stand back from the tracks wait for the train to enter then board the car! This way your life is protected.

New Yorkers are always in a rush.
Get in a car that's closest to the exit.
Don't get into a car that is empty.
On the trains I ride in, the conductor is usually in 5th or 6th car
Don't sit on the steps, you might get trampled on by those running to catch the train

The second one was good... but the dirty spot? As if there is a non dirty spot anywhere on a ny subway.

It's really a shame we need walls and doors to prevent people from intentionally getting pushed onto the tracks.😢

"You wanna be near the conductor for safety"... sounds like a third world country 😳

WOW, thank you so much for that‼️ I never knew that but it makes sense, I will keep these things in mind in the future.

There’s nothing more soul crushing then watching someone reveal a hack you thought you came up with, then slowly watching it become less useful

One more hack: always add at least 10-15 minutes on weekdays (20-25 min on weekends) to whatever google maps recommends as the subway route.

Cool to know! Of course I just got back two weeks ago from my first trip there. But next time I go, I’m gonna check that out.

When I was a kid I lived way Uptown in Inwood and would often meet my Grandfather for college basketball games at the old MSG up on 50th St. He worked an overnight shift so I would take the subway home by myself. Me as a 7 or 8 yrs old riding the NYC Subway by myself. I just planted myself near the conductor. Never ever had any problem.😊
