7 - Disappearing Act
Male seahorses are brilliant at doing magic – yes – they have the uncanny ability to disappear after the birth of their young. Remember, it’s the male seahorses that lay the eggs, and you’d think, considering he has spent so much time protecting and nurturing the eggs, he’d be interested in their well-being… wrong! Once they hatch, he leaves, never to return again!
6 - Fast Food
Being an ocean dad is certainly not a difficult job, and there are no Top Dad Ocean awards for a reason. Male sea bass protect their eggs and ensure they’re safe, but the moment the eggs hatch, the ones that didn’t swim away quickly enough, end up being food for the dad. It’s possible it’s a quick way for him to refuel after spending so much time looking after the eggs. Consider it pay back.
5 - Who’s Your Daddy?
Tasmanian moms are notorious for mating with several males during breeding season. This means that one litter could have multiple fathers. She can have up to 40 babies at a time and with limited capacity to milk so many, the babies have to fight for their right to live. Sadly, the majority end up starving to death.
4 - Mom’s Favourite
Any earwig that you find is a favourite of their mom, because these tiny creatures have the ability to pick up a chemical scent from their young, which is an indication of whether they are healthy or not. The weaker ones are tossed aside, and the mommy earwig focuses all her attention on the stronger ones.
3 - Love is limited
When it comes to Harp Seals, things get a bit confusing for the pup. During the first two weeks, the pup is the mom’s be all and end all. She feeds them, protects them and shows them how to survive those icy temperatures. However, fast-forward 2 weeks and that affection is over. The pups are weaned overnight and have to start fending for themselves. This puts the mother seal back on the market to start the whole process all over again.
2 - Dead Beat Dad
When the female is around, the male sand goby does all the right things and pretends to be the perfect father. He looks after his eggs and helps build the nest, but the moment her back is turned, he shows a different side to his personality. He gobbles up as many eggs as he can, and in particular the really big ones, because he knows they’re going to diminish their recourses.
