At work I use an HP Z8 workstation with Xeon 28 cores, 128gb of DDR4 ECC RAM and an Nvidia card with 16gb of ram which retails for around $25, 000....not including my dual 20-bit, 32" monitors, speakers, mouse, keyboard and tablet. Its a big brute... loud, ugly, runs hot, crashes often and is in general a pain to work with. But its what I need to do my job (feature film VFX).

Being able to have a workstation class machine at home for doing VFX work, 4k video and VR/AR would be awesome, especially at this price point.

The general public should really just shut up with all the whining... this computer isn't for you. Its not for gamers, internet trolls, Youtube "creators" or tech bloggers. Its a serious workstation for real work that pays real money, not likes and followers.

I am planning on getting the space grey with max configuration and plan on exclusively playing Minecraft.

Someday the internal SSD of your iMac Pro got killed and all the data lost. *How will you replace a new SSD over the dead one?* You cannot leave the dead internal SSD in iMac Pro while running your iMac Pro from the external SSD back up every time.

I recently received a new work computer, a Linux PC, with 20 cores and 64 GB ram, SSDs, etc in the same price range as this new iMac. I think that’s what computers cost at this level. Maybe my work computer is more customizable, but it will probably never be altered. People tend to freak out at the cost of this new iMac (or the 2013 Pro) because they don’t need this amount of power and aren’t used to spending that much.

honestly, the PC would cost similar ... 13k for these specs aren't that bad considering it does come with a 5k panel with some amazing color..
cant call me a fanboy since there is zero chance ill ever buy one lmao.

I suppose if it's $13000 in the USA for the top model poor Australia will be slugged for $18000. It's going to be very curious to see how Apple deal with the non USA pricing.

The configuration pricing is insane. the 8 core Xeon W 8 core is RCP $1113.00, the 10 core is $1440.00, the 14 core is $1947.00 and the 18 core is $2553.00. Apple is making about a $1k markup on the top end chip.

A great iMac Pro, a very professional expense, the big problem with this iMacPro is that it is sealed impossible to update, and that makes it expensive garbage, and from the back comes a jet of hot air, which is able to melt your marshmellows and heat your room in a matter of minutes, I have a very fast PC (not as much as the iMac Pro), but I can update it, I have a double liquid refrigeration, and practically does not make noise, the screen already has 8K ( dell), I can install up to 4 graphics cards. if imac is nice but, I want it to work.

For me, not being able to (at the very latest) add memory or change storage at a later date (myself) is a deal breaker for a device in this class.

In Germany max price is 15500 Euro, which is $18255 with current exchange rate. Now all of a sudden $13k for maxed out version sounds like a sweet deal, doesn’t it?;-)

Debating between a PC build (or Hackintosh) vs. iMac Pro with 64 GB memory and 16 GB graphics card. Mostly used for professional video editing, motion graphics (After Effects with Element 3D), film editing. Every time I price out parts and compare to iMac Pro, it's comparable.

It’s not for me, but I question who the maxed out iMac Pro is for. They’ll be refreshing the Mac Pro in a year or so. I suppose the enthusiast will shell out for this and dump it whenever the modular Mac Pro drops.

Looking at the depreciation on the 2013-2018 Mac Pro, which never got any upgrade per se, whatsoever, and which value will soon nose dive, once the New Mac Pro comes out, I am thinking this will too, in 4 to 5 years, especially since you as a consumer are not allowed to upgrade the ram, or storage, and I think the GPU's are soldered?

Hopefully I am wrong and Apple will upgrade these every 2 years, if not in CPU, than lower price, more memory and storage standard, more ports, better screen, more multicore software.

Apple's double dipping on the memory and storage is ridiculous, they should give you credit for the standard 32GB memory and 1TB storage you give up to upgrade to the higher tiers, but instead they just put that in another persons imac, and than charge you insane, way over retail prices for the memory.

So if you upgrade either, you are not only being overcharged for the upgrades, big time, you are also buying the standard included memory for the next guy, who is being charged again for it, when you gave it to Apple for free.

I really greedy purchase model, and yes apple is not alone, but are among the worse.

I'm just going to wait for the next IMac to come out after this one and then buy the space grey version as it will most likely be much much cheaper.

How does the fan noise of the new iMac Pro compare to the 5K iMacs of the past few years when rendering? Is the fan loud or quiet? How hot does the machine get over time?

to me this would be a helpful computer for software development and 3d modeling.. the display looks amazing

I just check some retail prices on the internet, and Apple not only does not give you credit for the original 32GB ram, they also charge more for the upgrade than most if not all retailers.

So they are effectively double dipping their customers, especially considering the discounts they get from memory suppliers.

Business as usual, now we know why they did not include a easy to open door.

it was not a heat issue, or their designers inability to add a memory or flash storage door, which would have been so cool, especially with the small flash only storage, or even a slightly thicker case and better thermal solution that could facilitate gpu upgrades.
It was just pure greed.

I will give them credit for finally adding more ports, keeping the headphone jack, mouse and keyboard standard (sorry Mac Pro).

I hope they still have digital audio out of the headphone jack.

I really like the old G5's and Mac pros that had dual ethernet for faster and more useful data transfer between macs and the internet.
And dual digital optical audio for connecting to a lot of professional audio gear without dongles.
