Who are the Nephilim?

Genesis 6:4 reads: “The Nephilim were on the earth in those days.”

We know almost nothing about the Nephilim. Who were these people?

The word “Nephilim” is the Hebrew word spelled with English letters that sound similar.

The translators of the Septuagint used the Greek word for “giants” to translate the Hebrew term nepilîm.

There are several reasons for their decision.

The ten scouts called the large-sized Canaanites “Nephilim” (Num. 13.33); they were described as “heroes of old, persons of name,” which could give them a legendary sort of stature; and, again, perhaps their fathers were angelic and so they could be physically large.

Neither of the first two reasons are adequate.

The spies were fabricating a myth in Numbers 13.33, and “heroes of old, persons of name” does not need to be related to physical stature.

The third line of reasoning is a hypothesis built on top of another hypothesis, thus it is weak. Even if the Nephilim were the “biological” offspring of “angelic men” and human women, there is no way to know whether this would affect their physical stature.

The Hebrew word for Nephilim probably means something like “fallen ones.” In my view, translating it as “fallen ones,” whoever or whatever they were, captures the spirit of the passage.

Or maybe we should just take the verse literally. Giants are real.

Years ago I studied this and I remember doing a search on all the references in the Old Testament for the phrase "sons of God". As I recall there were half a dozen or so.
The most famous one perhaps is in the book of Job. God called an angel meeting and the sons of God showed up, including Satan and God asked him what he had been up to.

These sons of God were spiritual beings, not humans. As I recall, the other references to 'sons of God" also seemed to refer to angels and not humans. I think the 'sons of God' in Genesis 6 were spiritual beings, not humans.

Basically he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I always imagined that the nephilim weren’t actually “giants” like how we think of giants today. They were probably just abnormally tall men, like 7 or 8 feet tall, with greater physical strength and capability than regular people because they were half angel. Like they were basically just super-humans.

This is actually a very simple one due to the fact that there was a discovery of an old manuscript called the dead sea scrolls and in those books were books of the Bible, also other books (Enoch) that explain what it meant to say when it was talking about Nephilim... there was a reason why God preserved these. To know the truth. Now the difference here is whether you are a believer or not.

Job 38:4 "👉🏾Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?👈🏾
Tell Me, if you have understanding.
5 Who determined its measurements?
Surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
6 To what were its foundations fastened?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 When the morning stars sang together,
And 👉🏾all the sons of God👈🏾 shouted for joy?

⁵ For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
⁶ Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

As the narrator surely must know, every word has a core meaning. The word in question comes from a verb that means "to fall." Thus, the core meaning of the noun would be as he first noted, "Fallen-Ones." Both Hebrew and Greek words, however, often expand in meaning, according to the context.

How about Kain, as an example? The noun is used as a proper name, but the same word is used elsewhere as a verb meaning "spear." There are so many Hebrew and Greek words with multiple meanings relative to the context that the list is inexhaustible.

The context rules. No doubt, no matter what others have translated the word in Genesis 6, the context definitely calls for the "Fallen-Ones."

In the Gheg dialect of the Albanian language Nephilim means "in the beginning". It is often used when referencing a story and being told to start from the beginning.

So my thinking is that the Nephilim were the fallen angels, literally translated, and they’re offspring were the rephaim, which translates to giant ones. Of course, I’d have to take a look at the original text to see if the two terms were used interchangeably or not, just my thought. While my opinion on the topic differs from that of the speaker, I DO agree with his statement that we can’t let these topics distract from the message God’s word has for us.

It is stunning that you can make a rational translation based on the meaning for the word "Nephilim" in Albanian language: "Ne" = "In" + "philim" = "beginning" "Nephilim" = "Ne fillim" (Alb.) = "In beginning" (Engl.). Maybe it could sound strange the explanation that I gave for the word "Nephilim" and many of you would not agree, but I thought It is important to share it!

I never liked conspiracy theories. The bad report was a lack of faith on the part of the ten spies not speculation of an intentional distortion of facts, nor did the writer, Moses, intentionally distort the facts he received from the Holy Spirit. I disagree with this theory, properly so called.

The only thing we know for sure is that the Nephilim were giants, men of great size, and the Anakim were part of them. Everyone is a fallen one as you well know. Also, Genesis 6:4 seems to be parenthetical.

(The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, ) (Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.) NASB "when the sons of God came into the daughters of men, and they bore to them" is a separate phrase.

When speculation runs its course, the truth is distorted. All we really know is that the Nephilim were men of great size. Genesis 6:4 is clarified by Numbers 13:32, 33. The unclear is brought to light by the clear. It is also interesting to note that Caleb and Joshua did not disagree with the other ten spies' assessment, so it must have been true after all.

You are so wrong about the word nephilim. This is an Albanian word and we still use this word (NE FILLIM) which means in the beginning, Albanian language is the back bone for all indo-European languages. Our language is the older than latin Greek or Hebrew, but to understand this you, have to bee open minded and learn Albanian, you will bee amazed.

It has always been my conviction that the Nephilim ("fallen ones") were not the giants, but were the angelic fathers of the giants. This man has verified that. But why was the video so short? It seemed to end before he was finished with his talk.
