Why Mercedes’ winning F1 form has disappeared

Remember when Mercedes won three out of four races before the 2024 summer break to re-establish itself as a Formula 1 powerhouse? Well, that run feels like a very long time ago now because, since then, the results have trailed off.

But is that because Mercedes has run into yet more trouble with its much-improved car development, or something to do with what George Russell calls the "infuriating" Pirelli tyres - or does Mercedes just fundamentally still lack proper understanding of how to make these ground effect cars work?

This season is providing a lot of inspiration for content creation. One week is Ferrari losing their winning form, then Mercedes, Redbull is collapsing, and McLaren misses their opportunity... All in rotation over and over again.

Spa was the only race that a Mercedes actually won on pace. Russel was gifted the win in Austria after the collision between Norris and Verstappen and McLaren completely fumbled a 1-2 in Silverstone due to poor strategy decisions.

Mercedes really never had a winning form in the first place in my opinion I think the downfall of Redbull & Ferrari masqueraded that, but I also wonder if they've ran into the same balance issues Ferrari had.

Other cars upgrading and track dependent?

This isn’t a dig at Mercedes but is it me or have car upgrades up and down the field have had a higher failure rate this season and not working as intended compared to their years? I don’t recall hearing so much talk of failed upgrades in the past.

Because it never existed in the first place. They got fortunate with certain races, they performed well in sub-optimal conditions (cold or wet) & then hit the jackpot in Spa with track position.

It was very much track specific. Spa and Silverstone were suited to it and the other teams dropped the ball.

I'd imagine they'll go well in Austin.

Pre watch: I mean isn't it pretty obvious? 3 of their wins weren't because they were the fastest it was because other teams/drivers messed up and they capitalized well

I think its just which car can keep the tires in the best happy window on all compounds will be the best overall, Cars with the best balance like the Mclaren and now it seems Ferrari are the most competitive and the teams which struggle more with balance like RBR and Merc struggle more in the race

They can’t use the qualifying setup cause, while its fast, it chews up tires and causes the brakes to overheat quickly which is bad is you trying to do a full race.

You could say ferrari had a downfall in 2014, or redbulls performance declining this in 2024. Every team has its ups and downs, this obviously was a down. Mercedes will eventually get to the top tables after some years.

No is talking about real in-depth track temps in Baku? Sure we are given only an average, but the reality for both Pirelli and the team engineers is, it’s an ever changing one, the track has various sections that are exposed to sun and then we get lots of shielded sections which offer cooler temps which have zero sun. So basically the driver is constantly changing to accommodate this feel. If you see, no one driver was pleased between the Hard and the Mediums. So of course if ever you were going to be challenged for a workable setup it’s… Baku.

Man I swear no one in the top 4 outside of McLaren has had any floor upgrades work as intended.

June 10, 2024: "Why Mercedes is suddenly an F1 frontrunner again" aged like milk. What a surprise.

The way tires interface with the road surface as they approach their limit is enormously complex. Imagine all the data F1, teams, and Pirelli have generated and all the effort made as F1 have tried to ‘improve the racing’ and still it’s difficult to predict how one set of tires will behave compared to another. Throw in the variable of 20 different cars and drivers and you get Russell’s comment. Crazy!

Please can you do a turnaround on the Williams performance! From where they've started this season to now is a brilliant turnaround.

Thanks for the content, love it as always!
