Almost one year to the day later, and still having this annoying problem, frequently. Thank you so much for providing the solution! Ironically, I couldn't even watch your video with the solution, so you might consider writing the answer in your introductory text. Kudos to the commenters who did so.

IF you can't see CoreAudioD in the activity monitor then you need to change the View to ALL PROCESSES -- by default if you're on a standard account it will only show your user processes, not the systems!

THANK YOU for this tip. I was having this particular problem in Safari, but Youtube had a different issue at the same time in Chromium based browsers. The audio would play but the video would not start. Restarting coreaudiod in activity monitor (explicitly stating the fix here because, ironically anyone just having the fast video issue can't watch this!) fixed ALL of the problems. Glad I landed o this after trying so many other fixes. Thanks again.

I ran into this exact problem, about an hour ago. YouTube videos were fast-forwarding like crazy and I had no idea if I triggered something by accident, but when the settings say it’s normal and the video speed was anything but, I knew I had a problem. I pulled out my iPad and, thankfully, the issue did not exist there. I was able to view this video, found the file with some crazy elapsed time, followed your directions, problem fixed! I’d like to know what the heck happened, but glad to get this handled. Hero!

When posting a video like this to fix a problem, PLEASE also transcribe the text (or at least the fix) in the description area because ... well ... if we're having this problem, we can't watch the video and actually see what the fix is 😕 ... so having it also described would be a huge help

Ive definitely been having this problem, also a separate issue is my 5K iMac crashing from kernel panic when it goes to sleep. Im really shocked Apple hasn't fixed these issues over the past few years. Ive read about literally 10's of thousands of others having the same problems. Ready to save thousands by switching to Windoze/Android.

Jeff, I had to watch this with the captions on, the YouTube video on pause, while slowly swiping the video to read word for word. Then, after following what was stated, I pressed play to finally able to even hear your voice. So, you've earned another "Thank you" because I have felt with this before & just ended up resetting the computer to take care of the problem, as suggested at the end of this video. Yet now I have this trick in the back of my pocket!

Here’s a solution if you aren’t an admin on your Mac. Launch Garage Band and create a new project. Close Garage Band. That’s it.
