How To Speed Up Your Mac When It's Running Slow

David & David explain what makes Macs slow, show you how to speed up your Mac, and debunk some misconceptions about what slows down Macs.

Macs can slow down for many different reasons. It's a good idea to check Activity Monitor to see if any application is using a disproportionate amount of your Mac's CPU or Memory. If an application or process is using a very high amount of CPU or Memory, that application is probably what is slowing down your Mac.

Your Mac also needs a certain amount of storage space to run smoothly. A good rule of thumb is to make sure your Mac has twice as much storage as it does Memory. So, if your Mac has 8 GB of Memory, it should have at least 16 GB of available storage space.

If you recently installed a third-party "cleaner" app, try uninstalling it. These apps aren't usually necessary, and they can often cause more harm than good. Leaving too many tabs open in your browser can also slow down your Mac.

One good way to speed up your Mac and keep it running smoothly is to update it regularly. You can check for macOS updates by clicking the Apple logo in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, then clicking About This Mac. Finally, click Software Update to see if a macOS update is available.

Finally, it's a good idea to plug in your Mac and leave it in Sleep mode. Ever since macOS Sierra, Macs have run maintenance tasks on its own. However, it needs RAM (random access memory) and battery life to perform those tasks and keep your Mac running smoothly.

After an update to Big Sur 11.06.06 on iMac from 2015. The whole computer slowed down. After checking the Activity Monitor saw that that Chrome was taking more than 50% of the Memory. Switched to Firefox and gained the lost performance.

Aside from the Mac commentary, David, your eyes in the thumbnail remind me of Dune!

I disagree with software updates improving the performance of a Mac. I have found that it slows down your Mac. it isn't as noticeable when your Mac. is newer, but as time goes on and you compare it against a new Mac., you will see a dramatic difference. Software updates are optimized for the latest Mac. released. I have yet to be proven wrong.

The best way I have been able to speed up an old Mac was to put Linux on it.
My kid’s 15 year old Mac wouldn’t boot, was so old it couldn’t be updated.
My kid loves it . Better than a chrome book or even the internet boxes sold uptown . I think it has an i5 in it.

Guys, are pinned tabs open all the time? How do I close pinned tabs and yet retain them as "pinned"? Glad I discovered this video. Thanks PF.

Great Video! Unfortunately we have a brand new iMac and nothing is the same as our old and what you're walking us thru to make the changes. I clicked on Users & groups but nothing is there that says password or login tabs. I know it's there I just have to dedicate time to find. Thank you anyway.

Hi PF, I am an 83 year old viewer of this video and resident in the UK. I follow a lot of your videos. I am currently on Mojave, and I am terrified of updating to Monterey. in case I am not competent to deal with any errors, or if my computer gets screwed up. Do you have any suggestions that would generate my confidence to attempt this update. I am aware of the back-up procedures, storage requirements etc. Many thanks Terry Davis

maybe you can answer this. If you happen to turn off my Mac it won't restart until you take the back off and disconnect the battery first. The battery is still good and last for about 3 hrs. any ideas?

Question: I have Adobe products on my iMac. I noticed that when I was uninstalling some Apps that I don't use, I had several versions of Adobe products on my mac. For example Photoshop 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022. Do I need all these? Or are they just the updates for Photoshop?

Hey guys, I’m a technician with a cable Company that provides Internet service. I do appreciate the ideas and tricks and tips that you provide because it allows me to pass that along to my customers that need help with their MacBook computer. There are times, that they want to quickly blame us for their Internet speeds. I do like to give them your site to look. that could give them the results that they are looking for. Thank you

Have a Macbook pro 2017 touchbar thingy. Only reason why I didn't step on it yet is because I like playing with Garageband.
