Forgot to mention re: the silence. It was Blomstedt’s masterful keeping his arms extended and not lowering them until HE felt it was time to applaud. He conducted the audience’s silence. Bravo, Maestro.

This concert film dates from December 31, 2015 and was recorded in the Gewandhaus concert hall in Leipzig, Germany. Herbert Blomstedt was 89 years old. 😎🎹

The respect and love Maestro Blomstedt has for his musicians is unsurpassed. I was fortunate to live in San Francisco when he was the music director. I learned so much from his tenure. His Dvorak, Sibelius, Brahms and Bruckner are without peer. The world has been blessed by his music.

I'm in absolute awe. To have the privilege of experiencing this, even second hand through the wonders of technology, is truly a privilege that is priceless.

This could be the finest Beethoven 9th I've ever heard.

Amazingly respectful how the German audience just maintained a total, reverential silence for many, many seconds after the final notes of the piece. To erupt in applause, as is so commonly done, just destroys the magic of Beethoven. That conduct should be the norm. We were spared the brutish “bravos” shouted by the show-off audience members wanting to show that yes, they knew the piece was over and one is expected to shout an Italian word at the top of one’s lungs.

Amazing. Blomstedt is 97 years old. He is conducting without a score and even joins the chorus in singing!! I know he can conduct this in his sleep but still this an achievement. Just f...king amazing!!

Wish all bickering and fighting world is buried under the words of this chorus.

This is a recording from about 7 years ago where Blomstedt is "just" 90 years old. Amazing performance!

Beaucoup de relief dans ce premier mouvement qui est à la fois sombre et terrible. Le chef fait bien ressortir les contrastes et l'inquiétude générale de cet extraordinaire mouvement.

Excellent conducting by Maestro Blomstendt, I had not heard it conducted in such a way, not even by Hebert von Karajan, I can say that.

Eu ouço quase todos os dias as sinfonias de Beethoven particularmente a nona e estou convencido que é a mais bela sinfonia de todos os tempos inclusive pela mensagem humana.
Obrigado Ludwig!

Saw Blomstedt conduct Nielsen with the SFO at Davies Hall many years after he'd moved on from conducting that orchestra. Charisma + mastery.
