In Saruman's death scene, the original direction was to have Saruman scream dramatically when stabbed. But Christopher Lee, a veteran of several wars, told Peter Jackson that the actual noise a person would make when stabbed in the back is a deep gasping/exhaling sound, because of the air in your lungs. They changed Saruman's reaction accordingly to make it more accurate.

Aragorn is the guy who you didn't know. The actor who played Aragorn legitimately injured his foot and toes kicking a metal helmet.

Trivia: When the Uruk-Hai throws the knife at Aragorn, that was not part of the original script. He was suppose to throw it into the woods. But the guy playing the Uruk-Hai got blinded when his mask slipped down and covered his eyes, causing him to throw it a Viggo Mortensen instead by accident. Luckily, Viggo deflected it with his sword and Peter Jackson decided to keep it in because of how realistic it looked. That's why it looked so good.

I kinda wanted him to show the scene where Gimli jams his axe in an orc's skull, and then the orc is twitching because Gimli said his axe was imbedded in its nervous system. It would be interesting to hear the doctor comment on that.

Boromir’s death is pretty accurate, both medically and historically. Too often you see in movies arrows putting down armored individuals in one shot. I believe Boromir was wearing chain mail but the fact it took multiple arrows to put him down, and he kept fighting, is realistic
Historically, it was not uncommon for knights, in full plate armor, to be covered in arrows. Even heavy war bows, with 200 lbs draw weight, can’t fully pierce full plate. They’d either bounce off or get stuck. A knight would look like a porcupine with all the arrows

3:08 Fun Fact: Aragorn deflecting the dagger was an accident. The actor who played the orc meant to intentionally miss but accidentally threw it directly at Viggo Mortensen. Viggo managed to hit the dagger mid air, everyone thought the shot was too good to leave out.

The knife that was thrown at Aragorn/Viggo Mortensen was accidentally thrown for real. The fact he still managed to deflect it with his sword is astonishing.

The reason Aragorn was able to chop those heads off was probably because his sword was made by elves. Interestingly, Gimli is the only one of the three without elvish weapons, and he's visibly rougher with his enemies, he could hit them in the neck and have it not go through the chain mail, then in the stomach to finish them

A fun fact:Peter Jackson, the director of the Lord Of The Ring trilogy started his directorial career making low budget ultra violent horror movies featuring excessive gore.
What has this to do with the Ring trilogy?
In one of the commentary tracks featured on the extended edition of the Lord Of the Ring Jackson mentioned the existence of a "gore" cut of the trilogy, apparently they filmed the battle scenes with much more detailed dismemberment and gore effects and then edited out the most extreme parts in post production.

Please do a Lord of the Rings part 2. I want to see and hear your medical knowledge on more scenes like Frodo loosing his fingers, Saruman falling on a pike, and Gollum’s unhealthy diet. FOR FRODO!!!

I saw Fellowship when it first came out in theaters, that orc decapitation by Aragorn had the audience cheering like crazy. I usually hate that stuff but that moment was unforgettable.

fun fact, the shot at 3:06 is real, they were supposed to throw a rubber knife, but the orc actor accidentally used a (dull) metal knife instead, so it was genuinely dangerous and critical that he deflect it with his sword

The sword Aragorn uses is Narsil reforged, it was made by a high level elf, not sure what the elfs name was, but it was imbued with spells and things like that, I believe, making it more powerful than a regular blade. He is also a Dunedien ranger of the numenorean line, blessed with long life and he was raised and trained with elves, specifically Elrond, who was his foster father. All in all he was basically born and raised to be this Badass noble fighter and it's kind of in his blood. Please feel free to fact check me though.

3:07 - fun fact about this scene (if I'm remembering correctly) they actually accidentally threw the prop knife directly at him when they were supposed to throw it to the side of him. I think it hit his knuckles or something but they kept playing the shot from there.

You should react to Saving Private Ryan medical scenes. They look gross but I've wondered how realistic they are. Like there's the part after a battle where the medic is checking everyone over and there's also scenes where main characters die and the team is trying to patch them up.

I would recommend reading Ambroise Paré's battlefield reports (I doubt any member of the medical field, even with the smallest knowledge of history, doesn't know who that guy is). Slightly later than what we associate with the Middle Ages, but the nature of warfare produced quite similar wounds regardless. A good longsword was very much able to slice a limb off. To say it was common compared to other injuries would be a stretch, but it was possible. For a quicker "read", the images seen in Hans Talhoffer's writings are a good place to start. They mainly depict sword usage, but it comes with the depiction of injuries caused by them. Slightly dramatic on their own, maybe a bit overexagerated, but with Paré's works, you can start to get a picture.

Great video!
A little surprised there was no comment about Eowyn's shattered arm when the torso-sized hunk of spiky metal exploded her shield. That much blunt force trauma to the arm is an injury I'd be interested in hearing about. As well as the stab wound to the back of the knee the Witch King suffered (just before being mortally stabbed in the face). Or maybe even what damage might be happening to Boromir's body as he exerts himself with shafts of metal and wood (arrows) stabbed into his torso.
