How to kill a fish Iki Jime

This is a great fishing tip video, and is highly recommend for looking after your catch. Fishing takes alot of time and money, so you want to respect and look after your fish, and great feed to follow. With a bit of practice it is very effective of killing the fish instantly and prevents further damage to the fishes flesh, from the fish thrashing about on the deck and bruising it's meat. Great for larger Fish such as Tuna and Mackerel as they can be quite dangerous and hard to handle. Just make sure they are secured well when you bring them onboard. This kills the fish instantly and you'll tell by the fish becoming completely still. This is the best way to respect your fish/catch, and end the fishes suffering with a quick humane death. Also still bleed the fish as well at the same time, I like to use scissors and cut the throat, also reducing the red meat, bloodline and keeping the fish as fresh as possible. The next step is to chill the fish down in an ice cold saltwater slurry if possibly and keep on ice. The fish can then last several days iced down properly. Dubstep you could say, but a must do, and no point leaving the fish out in the sun for an hour or more as it will start to deteriorate, especially in our hot summers on the Great Barrier reef. With the price of reef fish nowadays going through the roof, it does pay to look after your catch.

Would recommend bait, or give the soft plastics a go for bottom species such as cod and snapper. Would recommend the Berkley Gulps, work well and you'll see the 7" ones in our other videos and worth a look. The metal jigs are better for higher speed retrieves and more for Pelagics as the river 2 sea jig in this video for Spanish mackerel or tuna,

It does work on all fish, but can be tricky to find the brain on some. I find this method to kill fish works great on bigger Pelagic fish and brings them under control and prevents damage to the flesh or yourself. Work a try and with reef fish, i generally just bleed them and then Ice down straight away. Check out our how to bleed a fish video as well, easy with scissors,

Thanks for the comment, definately kills the fish instantly and brings them under control without doing damage to the flesh, alot safer too, with razor sharp teeth,

Pays to respect your catch and kill quickly, also ensures better quality for the table, and also easier to control rather than a fish going crazy in the boat with sharp teeth,

It will also kill the fish, and pays to bleed the fish, and reduces the blood in the flesh, If possible best is to brain spike and bleed the fish at the same time for the most humane way to kill the fish and preserve the flesh for the table, then ice down ASAP,

I'm thinking of sharpening the metal part of my stringer and using that when I spearfish. Lots of the little reef fish I shoot might be easier to poke with that rather than my dive knife. Any thoughts on that, internet?

It kills the fish instantly and prevents any stress or bruising to the fish, better than throwing the fish on the ground, damaging the flesh, Best then to put in a nice ice slurry,

can you still bleed it okay once the ike jime is done?

If you're quick, still pays to bleed the fih as well, as the heart will still be beating and helps remove the blood and makes for a better eating fish,

The real iki jime is you need 2 knife. The first knife you put on the lateral line first. Then, you hit the brain. This will affect the taste of a fish

I appreciate that you stun/kill the fish first right before bleeding. Bleeding fish without stunning beforehand is actually inhumane :(

If you stun RIGHT before bleeding, the fish will still bleed well. Stunning the fish is done by percussive stunning or spiking: percussive stunning involves a forceful and accurate blow to the fish's head with a blunt object and spiking involves driving a sharp spike (like a screwdriver or maybe a knife) into the brain of the fish.

The following methods are not suitable for killing fish as they do not result in a rapid or humane death: chilling with ice in holding water, carbon dioxide in holding water; chilling with ice and carbon dioxide in holding water; salt or ammonia baths; asphyxiation by removal from water; bleeding out without stunning.

Thanks for the video! I bleed my fish as well. I hope this video and post helps get the word out to people who may find this info useful.

Sharks are definately a bit tougher, rather let them go, and cut them free, can be Rather dangerous bring them onto your boat,

The scientific consensus at the moment is fish do feel pain, just as other animals do. I suspect the reason the idea they don't has persisted is how alien a fish is to us as opposed to a mammal, and it has probably helped people that might not normally be able to stomach killing an animal carry on fishing. Whether you believe all that or not, spiking the brain is good practice if only for preserving the flesh and subduing the fish.

Definately lights out, but the best, most humane way to kill a fish, better than using the old mackerel donga,
