Ruby and Ruby on Rails still power large swathes of the internet. It is certainly not as popular as it once was but it is still around. Also because no one is learning it there are opportunities in the market. Experienced Ruby/Rails devs can make a fuck ton of money.

Languages like Ruby and Perl still power a surprisingly large number of enterprise systems. Both are fairly easy to pick up IMO if you're already familiar with moder languages that take after them such as PHP and Python. Some lucrative work available if you're willing to take the plunge. I would add that if you can find a grey beard with Ruby/Perl knowledge, you'll get a head start and be forewarned of more of the pitfalls.

Ruby has native mobile now so I'm starting to learn it, also it interfaces easier with ip cameras for automation. Underrated tech imo, but your reactions are funny 😅

Then I just don't understand why in the USA according to BuiltWith Ruby on Rails usage statistics are 434, 661 and for Laravel 303, 604...

It depends on what you want to do. Find a junior job? Difficult with Ruby indeed. Create your own web application and become a rich man with your own startup? Ruby is first choice, with no other language and web framework as Rails will you be able to build your MVP as fast and as a one-man-show, even including mobile by now.

I thought you would change your mind about Ruby.

As a Ruby dev I agree. There are less jobs these days but salaries are pretty high right now.

What's a good alternative to ruby on rails? I've tried Flask with python for building personal websites, didn't really like it personally, and have switched to trying ruby on rails, I'd happily move to something easier and or "better", i just dont know what that would be

I'm learning it just for the fun of it

If you need it in a project, learn it. That's how I do, and now I actually have to learn Ruby and RoR for a big poject.

I doubled down in Ruby and Rails, self taught, and have zero regrets. Finding the first job is hard, but I earn good money and I only have 2 years experience. There is only upside from here. You just can't be a simp when it comes to getting your first job. Grind and do something to stand out.

Like everything, it depends. In particular it depends who's paying. If you have infinite VC money, you're paid by the hour and want a big team them one of the Javascript setups is a great way to earn a living. If you don't have infiinite VC money, or you're paid by the job then Ruby and Rails is the best solution.

The fact that it’s challenging to land a job right now isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I see it as an opportunity. Many people might skip learning this language because of that. In 3 to 5 years, there could be a significant gap between supply and demand of Ruby developers. Meanwhile you can get good at Ruby and RoR.

Awesome! I'm gonna learn it then!
