I own an A. O. Smith model GNR 50 100, purchased in 2010. The pilot light went out. This video was the best one I could find to help me, a female, with limited experience with this task. I followed these instructions in addition to the written instructions. When I pressed the ignitor, I heard a snap noise and saw a flash of light behind the little square window where the pilot is supposed to be. But, I did not see a pilot's flame. IF THE INSTRUCTIONS would have said that the pilot is NOT DIRECTLY behind the little window--that it's actually TO THE LEFT of the window out of direct view, and you have to bend way down and look through the window at an angle, I would have known that I had been successful in lighting the pilot! The next morning, I called a water heater company, explained that I couldn't get the pilot to light and they sent out a plumber. He was all prepared to install a new water heater for $2200 (because parts would take 4 weeks). Before he got started, I explained what I did and asked him to check to make sure I needed a replacement. He immediately said the pilot was lit! We just needed to turn the gas control to ON and adjust the temperature. I said, "Well, where is the pilot?" He showed me where the pilot was and, fortunately, his company didn't charge me $135.00 for the trip. I hope someday, that this helps someone else.

Couldn’t have explained it any better. Very simple and easy instructions to follow. Thank you

Calling the gas company shuts your gas off until a technician clears you in-person (Pennsylvania). You'll need to re-light your pilot once you get service restored.

Thanks so much! I have this same water heater and this video helped with getting it lit again.

I have a natural gas line bbq and accidently leaked a bunch of gas when I turned the pipe on. The previous owner had a gas dryer attached to the same pipe (without the dryer-specific shutoff valve) as the barbecue, but I didnt have a new dryer installed yet. As a result, turning on the line put gas into the barbecue as expected, but also dumped gas for 20-30 seconds through the unhooked-up dryer line. I thought I was set (it all was confirmed later as safe), but called the gas company to double check.

If you call you gas company about smelling gas in any way/reason, they are legally required to turn off the gas to your address. This will cause your water heater pilot light to go off an require it to be re-lit. This video was way more understandable and digestible than the label on the actual tank. This video was a lifesaver!

Cannot thank you enough. Your instructions were easy to follow and explaining the safety measures. Sunday morning the hot water shut down and before calling the technician I searched YouTube and was lucky to find you.

AWESOME!!! Saved me from having to buy a new one. Don’t know why it was out and I was getting tired of cold showers, even though outside temps were up to 103. Definitely was hesitant on doing this as the whole EXPLOSION warnings were very intimidating. Very clear instructions and great DIY tutorial video. I thank you, sir!

You helped me so much with this video! On a side note, I didn’t even think to look for the instructions on the unit. It’s like I’ve become so desensitized to seeing warning and disclaimer labels on everything that my brain automatically filters out the labels that have tiny writing on them. The instructions were RIGHT THERE. Regardless, seeing you go through each step was helpful and gave me confidence to know I was doing it right. Thankfully that seems to be all that was wrong.

Thank you for this. I didn't know why it was out. I scared to light it. After several weeks I and numerous views of your video, I finally got the nerve up and it worked like a charm.

This video was very helpful! I loved the comment about reading instructions. To my defense, the strap is covering most of it

Thanks for the clear and concise video on how to do what can be kind of a scary subject, especially for a single woman. I wasn't able to relate my water heater but at least now I feel armed with information on how to check the sensors and such from other feedback! Thanks so much.

Thanks for the video. I relit the pilot WITHOUT spending $200 on a plumber. A plumber is coming out tomorrow morning to see why the pilot keeps going out though. At least we'll have hot water for a shower tonight!

Idk why I didn’t read the instructions right in front of my face but thank you for making this and making sure we are safely doing this! It would suck if there were misinformation on this and you blew up your house 😅
