How to light a HONEYWELL water heater pilot

The instructions are written in the unit but sometimes it's just nice to watch it being done first. So that's why I made this video. You don't need a match with this new style from Honeywell.

This was the best video for starting up this device. Other videos and the label say to press it continuously and failed to mention the finesse that goes along with it as explained here. It didn’t start up the first time I pressed ignite like it did in this video. Took around ten times til I could hear the flame, then held the dial pressed until I saw the light blink like he said.

Does that red thing do we put it back where it was or leave it as it is?

What if blinks blue every 2 - 3 sec & when red it’s either a solid non blinking red or either a blinking red but when twist to mid range it doesn’t ignite like video

I would like to make sure people understand that it may take a few tries to get the unit lit. Do as The video states but no longer than 90 seconds. Then wait 10 minutes and try again. Remember to keep the pilot button depressed and hit the ignite button once a second. It took me three rounds to finally get my fire lit.

Good luck

8 years after you made this video you made my day, I struggled for hours intermittently trying to restart my water heater in the heat of the desert, it was your 'continue to hold' trick that did it, belated thank you!!!

Random tips for anyone who might be struggling with this: If you're having trouble seeing the flame, do it in the dark. You may also need to get on your hands and knees so you can look up through the window.

In my case the pilot light was at an upward angle so I really had to have my eye below the window to visually confirm it was lit, but turning the lights off helped me notice that blue glow.

So, I call my landlord (who is my mom). This is how things went...

Her: You turn the knob to pilot, hold and then click this square button. The light will come on. You have to do it for at least 20 mins.

Me: okay. (The instructions suck 😒)

20 minutes later...thumbs are red and numb.

Me: something isn’t right. Let me search youtube it.

Glad to say we didn’t blow up the building and we fixed it within 30 seconds 😂🤣

Bless your heart for sharing this!

Hey guys. The video was great but mine wouldn't start until I made sure the little white (or black) pin between the two wires coming out of the bottom right of the honeywell and into the water heater. If you call Honeywell the first thing they will ask you is did you push in the reset pin?

This igniter is AWFUL! The spark NEVER sparks! This thing is less than 2, maybe 3 yrs old, and has gone out about 3 times.. And EVERY time I need to relight it, its a long issue, that I end up having to call someone to help with.. What a TERRIBLE unit!
