A lot of people just want a camera, other than their smartphone, to shoot vacations, events, family, with a few closeups and some nature. Nothing complex. For them, an inexpensive camera is exactly what they need. Many don’t even know what RAW is. If they decide they enjoy it enough to go to something better, they can, as it’s the same mount. It’s tough trying to review this from a serious photographer’s viewpoint, as that’s not who is going to buy this.

Canon needs to stop making so many cameras and make some more affordable mid level lenses.

I have the R, R6, and the R7, and all have their use and strengths. The low weight and small form factor of the R50 I find very attractive, for travel that is. Had the M50 before and absolutely loved it, especially in combination with the Sigma 56mm. The lack of control dials is an issue, I admit. You can outsource one to the lens, but a second dial on body is kind of a must. Thanks for the review. As always honest and straight up.

To me it's all about image quality and to easily nail focus. The R50 seems great at both!

I'm a pro shooter although I just purchased this camera for my spouse for Christmas. She just wants something small (form factor) with great image quality with a great focus. She doesn't care about rapid burst raw shooting... although she will take photos in raw now and again. The main advantage is she can borrow some of my nice RF lens's (if she asks nicely) I purchased her a Sigma RF 18-50 f/2.8 as her main lens... as the stock Canon lens's that come with this camera are crap. She used to love taking photos when we started dating a lifetime ago.... I can't wait to see what she dreams up with this camera.

The production on these two episodes were great. It's interesting to see Canon expanding on their bodies to the extent of how many DLSR bodies they had. I'm looking forward to the APS-C lenses above all. It was great to hear that @Chris Niccolls wanted to share images that highlighted not just these consumer level cameras, but also the consumer level lenses currently available. Curious to know your lens set up for these particular videos, @Jordan Drake, especially the shot at 7:05 since the character of it is really brought out by your composition.

This is my first time watching a video of yours and you just happen to be shooting 10 minutes from where I live in South Carolina! That’s a great location for some awesome shots. Definitely subscribing and looking forward to watching more of your great videos. This review was very helpful as I am looking at getting the R50 as a replacement to my now ancient Rebel XTi!

For a lot of people, I feel like the M50 Mk.II is basically all they're looking for, but the R50 is a nice peace of mind since EF-M mount is, unfortunately, being abandoned and R mount will continue to grow into the future, and consumers can reliably put their current glass on a new body later on.

3:53 “looks like the m-mount is gonna fade away” - let’s be honest, the m-mount was secretly killed a couple of years ago, the widow just didn’t tell anyone and froze the body in the fridge to keep getting the pension (from some of us m-fans).

Even if I'm not in the market for this camera, I'll always appreciate your take on things. Even at 6 a.m.

Great work, as always.

Why do these RF-S lenses keep getting darker in aperture than their EF-S counterparts? I thought the RF mount would allow a better design.

Here's the deal. I got my M50 strictly as a webcam during the pandemic. But it also got me back into my love of photography. Since then, I've added an RP and then traded that in for an R6. If the R50 was to tank in value, used, I could see hesitation in getting it. But, like the M50, if it gets the juices flowing and is more attainable than the R10(that $300 will make a difference to FAR more people than you'll admit) then it is the perfect offering from Canon. If the R10 didn't exist, I'd see your argument against the R50. But it does. And Canon cameras hold their value. There is no problem here...

I'm glad I got an R10, basically the same camera with way mote controls. Brilliant camera it is.

You guys are great. Canon sR50 looks like a fine camera. With enough IS lenses, the lack of IBIS is not an issue for me. I get great shots and video with 18-45 lens.

The only question I want answered right now is, when will Canon release an RF mount version of the EF-M 22 mm f/2? Adoption of the R system is hampered by the complete lack of affordable, fast, normal and wide angle primes. For this reason, right now, the R50 cannot replace the M50 MkII, not yet.

This is very similar to the M50. It works better with the back screen when you tap what you want to adjust and then use the wheel. Entry level uses likely use the screen more. I think it is essential that the flash is manual. I hate a flash ta pops up and flashes when I did not want. Also you can always keep the flash on and raise it when needed. Electronic first curtain has been the norm in M-series. Having fully electronic is nice. M50 has only very simple fully automatic mode on electronic.

would love to see an R50 v R10 review to really get into the weeds between them!!

Thanks for putting the "no IBIS" right at the start of the video so I know I can just close the tab and forget this ever attempted to exist.
