Mezzo-Soprano vs. Contralto/ What is the Difference ?

In this musical theatre video I demonstrate the difference between the mezzo-soprano voice and the contralto voice as they pertain to musical theatre. They are different kinds of voices that can do different things but many times both voices can handle the same role in the same key quite comfortably. They are just going to approach the songs in different ways to adjust them for their own individual tones.

This is really helpful! I’m still trying to figure out what my voice type is. I can’t really belt on high notes, and I can’t go too low either. I used to think I’m a contralto, but I usually think my voice sounds better in the middle, not too high not too low. I can sing Colbie Caillat and Ingrid Michaelson comfortably. I can also sing Adele, but not very comfortable on the high notes in a few of her songs. Some Lady Gaga songs, for example, “You and I” is great for me until it gets to those final “you and I” repetition, it’s just very tiring for my voice and not comfortable, and the falsetto doesn’t quite give the song what it needs. I identity with Brooke Fraser’s voice, for example. I am thinking maybe I’m a lyric mezzo, if that’s a thing? Anyway. Keep it up with the content, I just subscribed.

Helpful to this non-singer. I had a misconception that belting is in the chest voice. Thought it was pushing your chest voice higher than it usually goes.

Hey, I tried to sing "the bad guy"because my range is contralto too, but it seems different, my voice was higher than the Bellies Eilish 's voice, how's that?!?!

Would a mezzosoprano or contralto in musical theater sound the same as their operatic counterparts?

I am a high mezzo-soprano (close to soprano). I notice that soprano ingenue songs sound more belt-like in my range, as a mezzo.

This is very informative. Actually, I never thought you were a contralto until u start singing. I thought that when contralto speaking, the voice is also dark/deep, which is not the case for you and is very unique. Is it not always the case? I cannot find anything about it online. :))

Thank you for your video 🙏🏻 Now I see that I am not a contralto. However, I take a few tones lower than expected from mezzo soprano. My range is 126 - 860 Hz. I have been identified as a mezzo when I was younger. Does it make me Contro-mezzo? Can you name any singers who have similar voice type, please?
