POKER TABLE:

HAND RANGE FUNNEL:

Play fewer starting hands (PREFLOP)
The first tip that I would recommend to be your friends and family at poker is also one of the biggest mistakes that I see amateurs make, and professionals alike too. And that is to play fewer starting hands.

Raise preflop to apply more pressure
The second strategy to help you beat your friends and family of poker is to bring it in for a raise. I know home games are supposed to be friendly. It's a family Potter friendly pot. That's all great. But again, if you want to win money, it helps to raise preflop. So if you're going to play a hand, be sure to raise two or three times the size of the big blind.

Profile Your Opponents

The third strategy to beat your friends and family poker is to profile your opponents. And this is the fun part. And this is where poker gets deep and multifaceted. There's a lot of different levels to the game. But the concept here is to realize that people's personalities are reflected in how they play poker. It's important to think about like how they act as a person and their their strengths and their character flaws and realize that those things are amplified, they're manifesting and are amplified in the poker table. You want to create a strategy for each unique player based on how you profile them as a person because how they are as a person is going to be reflected in how they play the game.

Look for Betting patterns
Strategy number four to beat your friends a family of poker is to look for betting patterns is a great way to approach poker in general, is you want to understand how people approach the game. So now that you've profiled your opponents, you want to understand who calls every bet with weak hands. This can allow you to value bet more often you can get more value from your strong hands, because you know that they probably don't have anything good, you can perhaps bluff them more frequently.

Practice your pokerface
The fifth and final poker tip is maybe the most fun is to practice your poker face. :)

A foolproof strategy I've found in friendly home games is along the lines of your 1st tip, especially if the other players don't play often and won't adjust their play. I always make it a point to play the opposite of how the other players are playing preflop. If people are playing many hands but just limping or calling min raises, I have picked up so many pots just by 3 and 4 betting preflop. Sometimes I wouldn't even look at my hole cards. But this only works against people who play somewhat infrequently. On the other hand if there is crazy action then I'll play fewer hands

Some of the home games I play involve newbies who don't really know how to play the game. They don't recognize what constitutes a strong starting hand vs. a weak hand. I've found that preflop raising does little to dissuade them from playing the hands that more experienced poker players would consider unplayable. They just want to get to the Flop and see if they can match up their hole cards with what comes out on the board.

For example, raising AKs vs. 4 limpers usually results in all 4 of those players calling the raise. This obviously increases variance to the point where playing GTO is not profitable. I've employed a tight limp strategy that works fairly well against these types of players and can usually make the money. Strong hands like Aces are obviously very susceptible to being beaten with this method, and that's where I try to pick off live tells when I have such holdings.

My friends and I like to play poker during lunchbreak in school (we use chips from a set of Othello and no real money) and I have one friend who can go all in without even looking at his cards and usually loses all his chips the first match and one who is the polar opposite and once folded pocket aces because someone put in ONE chip.

Great video, thanks. According to the preflop charts, it says that playing UTG, you should call/raise when having A3s-A5s, but fold with A6s-A9s. What is the logic behind this? How can A3s beat A9s?

Alec, this is such a mindless video. You have experience playing high stakes cash games in Macau and your insight to players is to play less starting hands. People can find that anywhere! Have a good one, just trying to help
