GOD Be with You, the phrase drops the with so when you put it together it’s “GO(o)D BY(e)” it may be more accurate to say it’s derived from “god be with ye”

Of course this is the one that starts alotta shit. Alright, upon reflection, im between agnostic and atheist. I don't believe in a god or gods nor do I think we will ever really know. Now, to address some "arguments" I see in this reply section.

"Youre sayin 'As an atheist, im not like those atheists' which is what he's referencing in the video" No? Never once thought of that nor did I intend for that to be the message. All im saying is that I think its dumb that atheists (really anyone in general) would get mad over that.

In italian "goodbye" is "addio" wich is "a + dio" or "to + god" it stands for: see you when we both die/meet god

„Bless you“ comes from the time around 1350 of the black plugue, sneezing was the first symptom of the pest. So the phrase was a wish to not got infected, bc it always led to a fast and painful death.

As an atheist, I very often say, “Oh my God, ” “God forbid, ” “God willing, ” “bless you, ” etc. You understand my intent, even with no faith behind my words

It’s honestly pretty heartwarming to see that no matter the culture, all of our “farewells” translated to “God be with you.” Just goes to show how much more closely related and alike we really are.

Which translates to god be with you.

Its cool that the goodby we all use also comes from the phrase god be with you.

It‘s stupid to cut phrases out bc of religion, saying this as an atheist. The smartest point here comes from Neil aswell, talking about this whole „before christ/before current time“ thing. It‘s the gregorians calender, they made the best one. So many of our modern phrases have originated from various historical things that might seem obscure in the context we use them in today. I say God Damn it as an atheist, and don‘t feel the need to say „yeah although I don‘t believe in god“ after saying it, it‘s stupid

I’m not religious, but I still use phrases like “I swear to god” and that simply because of it being a common expression and using it solely as an expression

This kinda stuff is why I repsect Dr.Tyson so much, he is a man of science and I don’t think believes in god but still understands and respects that so much of our culture was molded by people of faith and doesn’t try to reshape things, same thing with him still using B.C and A.D

The word "bigot" comes from "By God!"

In the 15th century, French Catholic priests from Paris who were trying to explain orthodox doctrine to the Normans, and the Normans (also Catholic, but poorly formed) would argue that they had always believed some other doctrine. They would often shout that their teachings were "By God!" Because they were Nordic/Germanic in origin, this would come out "Bi Gott!"

So the French Catholic priests started calling them "bigots, " meaning a provincial person who clings to outdated and incorrect ideas because they are poorly educated, which eventually came to mean specifically a person who clings to outdated ideas about race and gender.

In german we say "auf wiedersehen" (formal) which means see you again.

With friends we often say "bis dann" which is the same or "hau rein" which transalets roughly to "hit it in" which means to finish something
