Tbh there is more bots than real players know I completely gave up on tf2 until they fix it.

add it to aim bot botters, trading site bot accounts, that have the game open 24/7 etc etc.

To the people saying trade bots:
As someone who has used them quite a bit and as someone who's irl friends have hosted a trade bot for a bit. Typically trade bots are playing a non-steam game to give them a custom status on steam and rarely do I see bots with the game open 24/7. You don't need the game open for the bots to operate most of the time this is only needed when a bot needs to get change (turn refined into lower metals). And even if both of these weren't the case, there really aren't that many trading bots in tf2 to expand the player count this much the most popular item bots sell which is keys (they need to trade keys to get refined so they can give change in a transaction) only has 5 pages of buy and sell orders, yes this is only a % of total bots but the point still stands that trade bots aren't inflating the numbers that much (csgo is another example of a game with alot of automated trade bots).

i sometimes forget to close tf2 when i turn my laptop off (it goes into hibernation mode) and apparently steam, discord and other apps count me as playing the game despite me not playing
