When my FIL accidentally burned down his kitchen and part of the dining room, he came to live with us. He didn't have a choice because he couldn't go stay in a hotel by himself, and we thought that we were doing the right thing by having him move in with us. However, it was an incredibly difficult two years because he felt infantilized. The social worker at his gerontology office explained that because Memory Care units give the illusion of control the person is often much happier there. She was totally right. He was happy as a clam in his own apartment where he could play the TV as loud as he wanted, didn't have to worry about whether the kids were around when he was watching R rated things, and he could eat what he wanted (within reason). It was very expensive but we were fortunate that he had the means and it was worth it for her family's sanity -- all of ours.

Moving to Memory Care also involves evaluation of facilities staff/patient ratio, ESPECIALLY if the loved one is a fall risk and/or has terminal agitation. NOC shift needs a precise understanding of needs on that shift when staff is reduced.

Let me just say…. My great grandmother was…. Active…
One day she hopped the backyard fence and walked into the street.
One day in the middle of the night she tried to use a serrated knife to open the front door. She use to yell that we were trying to murder her or poison her any time we gave her food.

Ya… she passed away at 97

Can you do a video about when the dementia patient threatens their caregiver and what to do then?

Sorry perfect people, we didn't ask to have this disease. Forget where I am, what I'm doing and more than anything, forget who you are... my children. 😢

My grandpa wandered and also he was in his 50s and very young and tall and active he also had no memory and couldn’t remember why he went somewhere or wouldn’t talk and would mouth off to police. People blamed my grandpa for putting him in memory care but she was there 6 days a week and out whole family was there a few times a month sometimes more or less and we did just as much work as the care takers when we were visiting which is a lot of work and a lot of patience

Put a fake bus stop in front of the house.
Write "Bus to Go Home" on the sign.

We are at this point 😢 do you have recommendations on how to find the right facility? She's on a fixed income so it will need to be a public situation. We've been told to apply for Medical (in CA) but if you have other tips I would love to hear about it!

For people that get out of bed when they're a fall risk they put bed alarms on them. For people that might wander out the doors there are door alarms. You can safely keep your elderly one at home and your doctor can recommend people who can advise you on the best technology to keep your loved ones safe and at home. Of course it wouldn't go out the door and sometimes they wander off, but you could stop that from happening with a door alarm. There are all kinds of systems and technology available today. The most elderly are safest and best in their own home. If you do put them in a nursing home make sure that there is a camera in the room so they are not abused. Most states have laws now that state family members can install cameras in the patient room for their loved ones. But I really don't recommend ALFs or nursing homes are just too dangerous
