Couldn't afford a battery for my 66 Montcalm. Rolling started it dozens of times. Had to be sure to park atop a decent hill even if it meant a fair walk.

i've always wondered about this. i read a story about a guy who had an edsel in the 60s and roll-sarted it but had to get up to 40mph for it work.

I’ve roll started a 1974 Mercedes 240D before. The owners manual even gave instructions on how to do this.

It's all in whether or not it has a rear pump. Most automatics up through the mid-50's had them. Tried to have my '58 Ford Cruise-O-Matic push started, but wouldn't work--they told me the '57 Ford-O-Matic was last year with rear pump.

I has a 1973 Cadillac with the 501/ -472 engine and a turbo 400 stock transmission and I was low on gas and was in arizona and i wouldn't have made it but I shut it off and put it in neutral and went 35 miles with the engine off and turn the key on and as soon as you drop it in drive and it start as soon as you drop it in drive, but then again highway speed about 70 but yes some will start like that but has to be going fast

I had a 1960 Ford Falcon 2 door, had a 144 cube straight 6 w/a 1 barrel and a 2 speed Ford-o-Matic tranny. She was able to be push started cuz of the rear pump. I miss that car, Front left suspension folded under the car rounding a corner one evening. She never saw the road again.

This is on topic. It started with a memory. Then a query of can you push start a car that has an automatic trans. I found your video. Your Automatic transmission is an exception to the others.

I have a funny and mostly a sad story to tell. 40 years ago I was just leaving the movie theater at the mall. It was 10-11pm. The parking lot was mostly empty. A couple had a car, sedan, that would not start. Battery issues. I did not have jumper cables. Nor did someone else but they did offered to push the car to speed to try to push start it. I was curious. So I watched.

Back then I knew that could be done, if the car has a manual gear shift. Once they were over 10 MPH I knew something was wrong. Because if it was manual trans, something would be happening by now. But it was not.

Here's a clue to the ending. They were not driving on the outer traffic ring of the mall, but right across the empty parking lot.

The speed looked more than 20mph but less than 30. The truck just kept following the car, pushing it faster. Then I see the truck brake quick. As I watched the car, I see sparks and hear a "Bang bang, swish swish swish, many more swishes" as the car goes over the divider between parking areas and comes to a stop.

My guess on the damages are. They've now have added. Busted tires, busted rims, busted steering, to a dead battery. I would guess the wife or girlfriend was pounding him. "You should have called road service." I feel pity for the guy if it was his wife.

That would have made for a good educational driving video.

Old ford 3 speed autos would clutch start. Did it.

the problem here is that the transmission is now spinning without oil to the clutch packs causing premature wear
