Windows 10 Pro vs Linux Mint - Which one boots the fastest?

I took two similar Lenovo x240 laptops and loaded one with Windows 10 Pro and one with Linux Mint. Let's see which one loads the OS the fastest.
The Windows 10 Pro machine has a slightly faster processor i5-4200 vs i3-4010 so you would think that it is slightly faster.

I abandoned Windows back in 2014 cause of a defective update of W8.1 that forced me to format the system and reinstall after getting BSODs at boot time. I'm such a happy Linux user now.

My wife has windows 10 on her laptop and it was incredible slow and full of spyware. She was going to recycle the laptop when I told her to give it to me. I installed mint on it and used a windows 10 theme - now she wants the old laptop back lol

Man you did a good job :) Dont worry about people commenting about having the same hardware

Have you tried this with a fully shut down W10? The standard W10 'shutdown' is a form of hibernate, to give users the illusion of a fast start up, so you aren't really doing a true comparison.
FYI my wife's Thinkpad running W10 is noticeably slower after 12 months normal usage, while my Linux machines show no significant slowdown after three years usage.

Honestly, the speed differences are negligible between 10 pro and mint 20 for most use cases, and if there are noticeable differences in speed, it's because speed is heavily dependent on what you're trying to accomplish. I use them both for different reasons, and they are both perfectly capable OS's. I know linux users love their OS, but windows 10 pro is a very nice OS if you're unbiased and doing tasks that just work better using windows.

My windows 10 laptop was almost completely unusable. So slow and dysfunctional I thought it was hardware failure. Tried mint xfce on it, now it's quick, snappy, and reliable. Night and day difference.

I have a dell optiplex running Windows 10 with an i5 and 8gb ram, I'm thinking about seeing I can't get a Linux install for gaming, just a few basic games, that won't slow performance as much as Windows

I installed windows 10 LTSC and then Linux Mint on 2 laptops (4gb ram, both clean installations) windows 10 LTSC always booted in aprox. 30 seconds, while linux mint always took longer than a minute, sometimes 2 minutes.. there's no way I'd leave them with linux, windows 10 LTSC ftw

The problem with windows is, cheap office laptop (below i3) will laggy af to the point it's not usable.

can't even watch youtube at 480p without lagging.

Literally was at the same time and uh..
Fast booting is due to the SSD not the processor 🤨

Lol you gotta log in sir, Linux takes longer than windows to show the desktop after you log in

Fast boot is enabled on Windows, right?

I just switched my ryzen 3700x desktop to linux mint 20. It's so fast that it's crazy.
When I was booting from the USB 2.0 thumb drive, mint was about as fast as my old windows 10 pro.

I am so done with having windows as my main OS. Never again will I be stuck in their little ghetto.

2:25 to 2:35. Mint barely beat it. slower processor ( yes.by 200 mhz per core..but still..the win machine had a true 4 core while the linux machine had a dual core with 4 threads..facts are facts). this is proof enough Mint is lighter weight than windows

The difference was minimal to non-existent. I don't think this was a proper test

what a stupid comparison of OS'es. First of all you must do the comparison on exactly the same hardware and second, windows uses fast boot which is a semi hibernation shutdown and should be turned off to make the comparison relevant.

Mint is fast but i think Windows is better, anyways.
