This video got my girl and I out of a jam. This 2017 Chevy Cruze shut down in the middle of an intersection while waiting at a light. Officers pushed us out of the way and into a vacant parking lot while we waited for Triple A. I performed the steps as indicated here in this video and the car is running again.
I suspect the problem is in the programming of its drive functions as we’ve replace the starter twice before suspecting it was that.
Now the car is shifting normally (we are driving it as I type this) and not shutting off at any stop, whether you’re at a complete stop or creeping up to it (stop/go/stop/go). The RPM’s are where they need to be, and there’s no delayed shifting between gears, so there’s no over-revving either.
The underlying issue remains of course but now at least the car is drivable.
Thanks for posting this video, it saved us a BUNCH of aggravation.

I have a 2017 Cruze hatchback with the 1.4T engine and the 6-speed automatic. It also has the auto-stop/start feature. I love the Cruze...but I hate that there's no on/off button. And then Chevy goes and puts an on/off button in the 2019 Cruze models. Chevy should offer up a free retrofit to all 2016-2018 Cruze owners to have that on/off switch installed as an apology for not making it standard from the very start.

The main problem I have with it, is that when you get to the stop sign at the end of a freeway off ramp, with the turbo charger spinning at 40 or 50 thousand RPMs and the engine shuts off, it cuts off the flow of oil to the turbo. My turbo needs to be replaced at only 120, 000 miles, and I started using L6 almost 4 years ago. Auto stop should NEVER be installed on a turbo charged engine.

I found that just pumping the brake pedal gently once or twice as you come to a stop will defeat the auto stop/start. I takes a bit of training, but becomes second nature after a while.

My Auto Stop literally just turned my engine completely off and wouldn’t turn back on….In the middle of the busiest street in town. Luckily a fire truck was going by at that time and it gave me enough time to react and restart it myself. I bought it new in 2017 and this is the first time it’s failed to restart the engine. Time to start turning it off. Thanks for the video.

thanks for the work around video! We have a rental car with this system in it. It only goes up to 6, but it still works.

I got this car as a rental when I went to Chicago and was unaware of the start/stop system. For the life of me, I don't understand why a timer is not configured into determining if the engine really needs to be turned off. It makes sense if you're stopped for several minutes. But not being able to turn off the feature is perhaps one of the most baffling decisions a manufacture could make.

I considered the Malibu or the Cruze for a while now. Not anymore, especially after driving a rental Malibu for a day and the damn thing shut off my AC in 90F heat, because the car decided to turn off the engine, all this in a stop&go traffic for an hour.
Something tells me, the reason they didn't offer the disable feature, because they want to cash in in the service dept in a few years, when all these cars will have worn starters!

I have a 2017 cruze and I tried your idea and it works AWESOME!!! thanks for the info!!!

Yea. Figured that out day one. I don't mind the start stop to be honest. It's great for drive thru windows.

I'd you want to elimate it for good, get the car tuned by a GM tuner (I use tricefta performance). They can disable the start stop and do a number of other things, from increasing power and torque to fuel economy improvements and transmission shift speed.

*_My girlfriend had a 2017 Chevy Cruise LT. This 2024 I'm going to start modifying it for her & ever since I found out about rhe auto off feature ive always hated it… Not only is it a terrible design for the moyor overall but I never really found a way to turn it off until recently. I did a free modification to her airbox yhat makes her turbo blow off louder, and during my test drive with her car I also founf out that leaving the car in 6th gear in manal mode is the nest gear to be in. It will say L6 but it's basically regular driving mode. This will permanently turn off the auto stop feature._*

Thanks for tip on this, it works on my 2018 GMC Terrain. I’m ok with Auto Start/Stop everywhere except when I’m in metering lights, stop and go traffic and parking in garage, this tip helps in those situations.

Why does it turn off the engine when you pull in a driveway to park then crank up again when put the gear in PARK?

I hate this auto on/off feature too! I discovered just a couple weeks before running into your video, that when I put it in L it doesn’t do it!

I have a 2017 Chevy Cruze and I used this once before when my car got messed up and I was afraid if it auto stopped on the road I wouldn’t of started again! But this trick deff works

Nice trick, thanks for sharing. If you decide to get an after market tune, you can turn that off (forever though). Perhaps you can even contact those people (BNR or Trifecta) and get a flash that doesn't change your program but for the start/stop.

I’m so glad I found this video. I hate the auto-start-stop function! I can’t stand it while I’m driving. I can feel my car’s engine turning off & on & it’s somewhat laggy when driving.

Now my only question is, is it completely safe to drive in “L” all the time? This won’t damage my car over time? I hope you or someone can get back to me on this. Thanks in advance!

Start Stop technology is nothing but something else to go wrong in your vehicle. My daughter has been having trouble with her Cruz for the same reason. And it isn't always easy for the mechanics to replicate the stalling problem she has because the problem is sporadic.

So do you have to do this every time you start your car and do you have to keep it in L mode each time?

The only time that auto-stop feature annoys me is when I'm parking. It seems dumb to have it switch off, only to come right back on when I shift it into park. Having a bit more of a delay between reaching a full stop and activation of the auto-stop would fix that.
