You anticipated my comment. If God can die on a cross then God can have a mother. In both instances, they are qualities of human nature which Jesus possessed

I'm Protestant. Recently, I've been learning about church history and its theology. One of the most basic theological points is that if Jesus is God, and Mary is the mother of Jesus, then it is correct to say she is the mother of God. On a side note, I have found it helpful to explain to new Christians the two natures of Jesus first, so they understand how she is the mother of God.

I'm an Evangelical and I believe Mary is the Mother of God. She didn't pre-exist Him, but she did give birth to Jesus, who is fully man and fully God.

Your explanation makes sense. Protestants think Catholics are saying that Mary giving birth to God is saying that Jesus was not the preexistent Word in John 1. Thank you for this explanation.
