Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through YouTube videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

Another important event in Italian history occurred today: they beat Scotland at rugby in Rome.

The only reason Italy entered the alliance with Austria and Germany in 1882 is because we wanted to annex Tunisia as a colony and had considered it in the Italian zone of influence for decades... but France got there first, so we allied with the enemies of France.
This event is known in Italian historiography as "The Slap of Tunis".

Most of the battles took place within a 100km radius of my house... On Monte Grappa in Veneto there is an ossuary, numerous museums and you can still see the trenches in some places.

The vast majority of the italians didn't want or didn't even care about the war.
However the interventionists were smart and organized a lot of public manifestation to make it seem like everyone wanted to go to war... in reality the common poor farmer in sicily would have liked to simply work in his farm

Prior to unification there were areas of Italy that had been under the dominion of the Austrian Empire and the unification of Italy was won, also in part, thanks to a series of independence wars to fight off the Austrians (who had oppressed the local population). However, there was still some Italian land that was still considered part of Austria (despite being inhabited by Italian speakers). What stirred the segment of the population, that didn't want to go to war, was the prospect of getting this territory back. At that time there were quite a few Italians who still fostered hatred/hostility/resentment towards Austria and, therefore, there were probably quite a few who were only too glad to seize the opportunity to grab back land from Austria.

You can see Sicily from the coast of Calabria (the region of Italy that almost touches Sicily).

Giovanni Giolitti served 5 terms in government. Although they were not consecutive terms, they spanned almost 3 decades.

No seperate peace meant 6 months after joining the war they couldnt sign a peace deal with austria if they offered them what they wanted. They could only sugn a peace deal when the whole triple entente did

It's good this videomaker admits it's a far more complex situation. Every conflict has multiple versions of historical events. But that part of Italy is so insane, one could study it fot life. Istria changed hands so many times, just saying 'Italy wanted Austrian territory 'is a bit overly simplified. Ask anyone in & around Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy, Austria, Slovenia, etc ) and you still get complete opposite opinions about the 'How.Why and What ' on that part of Italy.

@2:50 I'm not sure but it looks like it might be an ancient type of boat they used to catch sword fish. Catching sword fish has been practiced in the Strait of Messina (that narrow strip of sea that separates Sicily from mainland Italy) for over 2, 000 years.

Maybe, since we are talking about it, you might be interested in the ideas of Italian Futurism

MANIFESTO
of the Futurist Woman

« We want to glorify war,
the world’s only hygiene, militarism,
patriotism, the destructive gesture
of libertarians, beautiful ideas worth dying for,
and contempt for women. »
(First Manifesto of Futurism).

Humanity is mediocre. The majority of women are neither superior nor inferior to
the majority of men. They are equal. Both deserve the same (and so on)
