Watch stuff and learn and chill hi whatsup ⚔️👋🧐

Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through YouTube videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

the concept of origins and physical characteristics is much broader, it cannot be superficial as it did in the video, being blond is not necessarily connected to Germanic or French origins or being darker in general does not necessarily mean being of Arabic origin, we have a much more varied genetics to be proud of.

"More Arab descent" means the boy did not study history.
Only Sicily was actually conquered by Muslims, but they were predominantly North African (Berbers) and left the island after the Norman conquest.
So the Arab mix thing is an American bias.

10:50 Sardinia is fairly mountainous (so is Corsica) so it's not the best place for dense population

Let’s be real here, a lot of countries are divided. Whether it’s north and south or east and West. In the UK it’s the same as Italy, although it’s the south where power sits. Eastern Germans, still not fully reconciled with West. American North and South.

6:55 That is the Po Valley. Named after the river and not the panda Po :)

Italian here, there is also a huge criminal rate difference from north and south, southerners also have the reputation of tax evaders and generally people from Sicily are considered like the Florida men of Italy. Sicily also was the birthplace of mafia which effectively controlled the island until the mid 80s with a pause during the times of fascist Italy, in which fascism fought the mafias through brute force effectively killing them off with the survivors fleeing in the americas, or hiding in isolation. In the 80s the government had undergone a huge mafia cleanup thanks to the magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino which were assassinated by the mafia for being their greatest menace. Now the situation in the south is starting to stabilise but it’s stilL a long way from getting to the same level of the north.

The tourism part is wrong, the most tourists go in the north due to proximity reasons (at least valid for europeans), while from other continents Rome, Milan + Northern lakes, Venice, Tuscany and Naples lead the way, the South has mostly italian tourists, the Alps are indeed very popular (with the northeastern ones being the most beautiful scenic wise, the northwesrtern side is anyway more popular among french and british tourists)

Lots of imprecisions and superficiality in the original video. A few examples: a) the tourism issue. Tourism is more concentrated in the North for a series of reasons, such as proximity, availability of roads, trains, and airports, a more developed tourism industry, not forgetting the higher density of artistic cities (usually but not only former capitals of the smaller states), while in the South there were only two capital centers (Naples and Palermo); b) the “phenotypes” of Southerners and Northerners are NOT so distinct - for example the speaker forgets the long permanence of Normans in Sicily and Puglia, for example. Reason for which I would not be surprised in seeing that there are more redheads in the South than in the North (it would be quite a curious statistic to make); c) re: previous States, it is curious how the speaker gives more importance to the influence of Hapsburg domination of Veneto which lasted only 70-ish years instead of 900+ years of independence as a Republic…. And I could go on forever… I see lots of stereotypes, and incorrect ones at that!

I would have liked to see a map reflecting crime rate, as southern Italy has a bad rep on that regard, but I don't know if it is actually true. I could have looked it up in stead of typing this comment I guess :o).

Organized crime in Southern Italy wasn't mentioned, we all know what I'm talking about. Massive problem to this day, and a major cause of S.Italy's backwardness, even though it has recently spread to the rest of the country and even Europe.

There are a lot of inaccuracies, the south before unification was more industrialized than the north, then many inhabitants of the south emigrated there are 60 million Italians in the world and many descendants are originally from the south. Currently Sicily and Campania are 2 of the most popular regions in Italy with 5, 000, 000 inhabitants.

1566 is top date for the Spanish Empire, because that is after HRE Charles V (Spanish) but before Dutch Reformation.

you should also know that Calabria has the most powerful mafia in the world (the drangheta) and every year it is estimated to invoice double the Italian GDP. take it as additional information .

It is divided in England too, although it is the north that is poorer. The money is in the south of England where salaries are better and everything is more expensive. Even the pubs are much cheaper in the north.

Southern Italy is Magna Graecia, the North has Celtic and Germanic influences

Unification of Italy took place in 1862, not in the 1848 as the video said. That's a really big mistake. Anyway, it's not your fault, you just show a video.

Such a long history. Italy wasn't even a unified country in 1823. Wife's dad is from S Italy ... been there since Hannibal.
