What Makes You Happy?

The key to understanding what makes you happy, like actually happy, is as simple as understanding what motivates you to do practically anything.

Have you heard of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation? Yeah, well, that. One leads to genuine happiness while the other keeps you trapped in an endless cycle of superficial pursuits.

Ever wonder why some activities bring you pure joy while others feel like they’re taking you for everything you’ve got?

This short breaks down the psychology behind what truly motivates us and how it affects our happiness. Watch it. Full length video in bio.

That dog's bark truly helps maintain the audio quality.

This! This is why I quit my 9 to 5 and changed my lifestyle doing creative stuff. Money isn't as certain and sometimes not so much, but I wake up happy to do the job 80+% of the time because I enjoy the process.

i half expected him to throw the dog, the way he has thrown books. Thank god, he

you've got intrinsic motivation only half right.
Intrinsic motivation can be fueled by both positive AND negative emotions (or rather: comfortable and uncomfortable emotions).
A bodybuilder with body dismorphia is intrinsically motivated but fuelled by extremely painful negative emotions.
This sort of things are certainly not something to strive for.

Dude gives good advice, maybe he should write a book or something

Yes, but where do these intrinsic motivations come from? And what if external forces disrupt your internal motivations so that you no longer feel joy doing things you used to? You know, like growing up in a dysfunctional home with emotionally abusive parents? How do you correct your intrinsic motivation so that you can be a happier person?

That's true, but intrinsically motivated jobs don't pay the bills! How am I supposed to care for my family if my passions don't pay well?

There is a grey area in between. I went part time at my job to do a Master's degree in a subject I loved. However, I had to force myself to keep working towards the main objective. There were highs and lows.

How does the painter get down without stepping on his art? And how does he fill up his buckets with holes in them and get up on the trapeze with any paint left? A lot of questions about that video.

So if I like eating ice cream while doing a puzzle I'm gonna do it because I am intrinsically motivated 😊

OK OK OK OK... but how does someone with ADHD move towards primarily intrinsically motivated? It's hard..

For an ADHD person like me, intrinsic motivation is almost non-existent

Sometimes you can't follow your intrinsic motivation for external reasons outside of your control unfortunately (broke as hell)

Sorry. Starting off by saying intrinsic motivation is the thing you are doing confused me for a bit. Might be better to word it as the motivation for it is intrinsic. But yeah, the recommendation is to have more things in my life that love doing just to do, instead of things that i hate and can even, at the end, yeild no reward. It's good. Thanks.

What if motivation doesn't exist in the person if it's intrinsic or extrinsic !!!??😶

"because they do not reward us externally" ... What does that mean ?

Mark has great content but his “social media hands” and constant movement to keep the viewers attention distracts from the quality of the message imho
