Today, we’re going to talk about the effect of sugar on the brain.

Sugar causes a temporary spike in dopamine, which affects your mood and behavior—making you feel happy. However, the receptors for dopamine can eventually start downgrading. This means that it will take more and more sugar to create the same effect.

Concentration and focus require a good amount of cognitive power. Sugar alters the inhibitory parts of the brain—causing you to have less control over your brain and making it difficult to concentrate. Sugar also atrophies and ages the brain over time and reduces blood flow to the brain.

Medications like Ritalin are sometimes used to treat conditions like ADHD, where people may have a problem with focus and concentration. However, medications come with side effects.

The Sugar Association says that sugar is fine in moderation. They also say that carbs are the #1 source of energy in the body. But, we know that you can also run your body on ketones.

Another thing they say is that your brain needs sugar. While certain parts of your brain do need sugar, this can come from the sugar your body makes naturally—you don’t need to consume sugar.

What you can do to support focus and concentration:
1. Stop consuming sugar and try alternative sugars
2. Take natural vitamin B1 or nutritional yeast
3. Start fasting (18 hours a day with a six-hour eating window)

I am guardian to a young man. He came to me through the Foster system. He was 6 when I got him. He was a TOTAL mess! He had several diagnoses including ADHD. He had been fed sugar for his first 6 years. He was in 4 other Foster homes before me. He was moved because of behavior issues. I stopped the sugar! We went Keto/carnivore. We also added nutritional yeast. I make an occasional keto dessert. He is now almost 11. He is a different kid. He no longer suffers with ADHD. He will immerse himself in a book for hours!!! His favorite book at the moment is a collage physics book!!

I am 66 years old male started doing mainly carnivore diet five months ago and eating one meal a day about that same time. I could go on and on and on but I’ll keep this short. I always thought I had some type of learning disorder because it seemed too difficult. Now I embrace learning with open arms look for opportunities to learn spelling was always difficult now I learn how to spell a word and I’ve got it. I grew up in a time when breakfast cereal was just coming in in the early 50s. I’ve gotten off of all‘s processed sugar get my carbs down to under 50 g per day my mind is so clear I’m not saying I’m all the sudden Einstein but I am so much better than I’ve ever been in my life.

I'm actually SHOCKED at the improvements in my cognitive abilities since adopting the 18:6 Intermittent Fasting regimen. I also cut out sweets, bread, and potatoes. I eat insulin-friendly fruits, veggies, and cut back on daily meat consumption. My level of concentration and creativity have BOTH BEEN ENHANCED. Thanks to Dr. Eric Berg, Dr. Sten Ekberg, Dr. Jason Fung, and Dr. Pradip Jamnadas.

I follow everything that dr berg says (helthy keto, fasting, omad, kale, nutriotional yeast, vitamin c foods etc.) and my life quality has improved dramatically. I've been doing it for two years already, and although I'm still 24 years old, I feel like in a natural high, even usually through the day going in states of euphoria

I'm a musician. When I cut out sugar, I discovered I can remember words to songs a lot better. Surprising benefit.

Quit sugar, loss weight, felt amazing all the time... and all hell broke loose!
For instance, a old friend of mine went berserk in the middle of traffic because I wouldn't engage in a argument. Basically I was being too happy around them. Outside of that everything is absolutely great! Better focus more energy and better memory! Thank you Dr. Berg!

My mother has been having symptoms of dementia over the past few years and has been getting worse and worse. Concentration is slowing fading away and has been diagnosed recently with dementia. What i have found is that she loves sugar. She will take a spoonful of sugar and eat it. She will have a banana and dip it in sugar. She craves milk chocolate and marzapan treats. She will have toast with sugar. She has All Bran cereal in the morning with espresso and will add 2 or 3 spoonfulls of sugar because its not sweet enough. Everything has to be sweet or she won't eat it. I am thinking of taking the 20 pound bag of sugar that she has and leave a bit until it runs out and then stop buying it for her. I was buying it for her because she would make bread and cookies but now she dosen't know how to make it anymore. I believe her eating sugar on a regular basis is the cause of her having dementia. The doctors always go with its hereditary, its genetic because her mother passed away from it. But i think we must look at the diet which i believe is the cause. I think the lobbyist for the sugar industry has a massive impact on government and health regulators to not make sugar seem harmful. My father is under the impression that sugar gives you energy. This is what the media promotes and here we are a fit and otherwise healthy woman is loosing her mind. Its heartbreaking to see the steady decline of a beautiful and loving mother rapidly loose her brain function. I am going to see if i can slowly reverse it by introducing coconut oil, MCT oil and eliminate sugar from her diet. I have no other choice since there is no help from main stream doctors who want to give her a pill instead of looking at the root of the problem.

100% for myself as well as my children...the reduction of sugar in our diets for me helps control my overall intake but for the children, the sleepless nights and mood swings are less and less with decreased amounts of sugar. I'm not a sugar nazi it's part of life but I can tell you when we consume a lot of sugar I become very lazy and my children run around like chickens with there heads cut off, there is no attention span and they lash out / talk back. So we keep sugar in check for sure. Thank you Doc.

Thank you for all the work you are doing to educate us on our health.
You have helped me a great deal when my doctors were more focused on giving me medication instead of looking at the root cause.

As a Muslim I've been doing fasting at a least one month a year! But I also started doing intermittent fasting and prolonged fasting as well (I've done 72 hours once last year)! I've really noticed a big difference in focusing and in my health generally! Of course, I've given up sugar as well!

It’s true. I can honestly say my memory is better after practicing healthy keto and intermittent fasting. My energy levels are better too. The longer I practice, the better the results and the more in tune I can be with what my body needs. It has improved my success at work and in life in general. I used to crave food all the time. Now I know my cells were not being nourished properly and weren’t letting me be truly satisfied.
