How to add new African cichlids to your aquarium.

When I go to the pet store I always hear things like move the rocks around, turn the light out and stupid stuff like that that doesn't work lol. Here is what has worked for me when adding new fish.

This isn’t how you’re supposed to do it honestly. Aggression will occur regardless and the dominant male(s) will pick on the smaller new fish at some point when you remove him from jail, lol. This is a smaller tank but having a large enough tank with plenty of hiding places, Texas Holey Rock, etc. will ultimately be what curbs aggression in African Cichlids. But first turn off all your lights on the tank and in the room. It should be pitch black almost. Acclimate the new fish in their bags for 30 minutes, then release them to the show tank keeping all lights off for about 3-4 hours. This will give the new fish time to procure a hiding spot if need be and normalize breathing. Furthermore, dominant Mbuna will pick on smaller mbuna and the dominant Hap or Peacock will likewise do the same. Really only long term solution to curbing aggression is to have a large enough tank, don’t overstock it and make wise tank additions over time.

Is it okay to do the opposite? I got a new fish but he’s like 1 inch I’m afraid he’s going to get eaten by the other fish which they are like 3 inches long
